Where in Northern NE Do You Vacation?
We're planning a few long weekends this summer to get acquainted with our new state and region. Where are your favorite places to go for weekends in summer?
We do everything outdoorsy except fish (well, the kids like fishing but I wouldn't describe us as fishermen...) and I'm not above some TLC either -- we're easy to please.
Everyone always wants a price range...I won't say money is no object but it's not the top concern. Let's say under $200/night for starters...
We are attempting a really last-minute getaway this weekend, too, so ideas for last-minute escapes are also welcome! We're celebrating selling our house !! :-)
Thanks!

Every summer I visit my grandparents in Bristol, Maine, and it's one of my favourite places in the world. The Mid-Coast of Maine is fantastic, with charming little towns like Damariscotta, Wiscasset, Boothbay, and Camden. Pemaquid Point and the view from the Camden Hills are amazing, as are the more off-the-beaten-path places... like my grandparents' cottage in the woods.

Near Littleton, NH because we have family there and can afford it. Also because littleton is near anything interesting.

My favorite part of NH is the Great Woods region. Colebrook & Pittsburg. We like driving around the back roads of Pittsburg looking for moose.
In Maine, we really like Acadia National Park. It's gorgeous.
In Vermont, Stowe is a fun weekend destination. Tons to do - hiking, gondola rides, biking, swimming holes, good restaurants, etc. Burlington is another good VT destination.

If you want some pampering with activities, you could try the Mt. Washington Resort - Mount Washington Resort - Bretton Woods, NH - New England's Four-Season Resort. or the Mountain View Grand - New Hampshire Hotel Conference Center | Luxury Hotel Destination Wedding | North Conway Golf Course Corporate Meeting - Mountain View Grand Hotel - Not sure of the prices, etc.
We live in Littleton and there are activities either here or in surrounding areas that we go to. If you like plays - there's the Weathervane Theater in Whitefield which is also nearby - Weathervane Theatre - Whitefield NH
If you want some "ghost hunting" you can stay at Thayers in Littleton and might get to experience that as well

Thanks for the ideas everyone! I think we are going to look at the Notches and mid-coast Maine for this weekend -- any favorite places to stay that have a chance of last-minute availability? I am hoping to find a cabin or small cottage to rent for the weekend, or an inn with some sort of suite thing where us and the kids aren't in a hotel room all together (so that we can hang out in the next room after they go to sleep)

Now they are charging people to visit the grounds if they just want to hang out for the day without actually paying for an overnight stay. Those photos, with Mt. Washington in the background, are awesome! The last trip I took with my bf before he passed away included a trip up the Cog Railway!
Don't forget a little further north - The Balsams!!
New Hampshire Ski Resort - New England Ski Resort | The Balsams
It's close enough to Pittsburg for a trip up to Moose Alley or the Connecticut Lakes. On your way up you can picnic at Beaver Brook Falls in Colebrook.

There are some places in Pittsburg that offer vacation wildlife/fishing/scenic tours packages with overnight lodging.

I could never get enough of the White Mountains, especially the Presidential Range!
I now live in the Moosehead Lake region of Maine. This is a great spot with plenty to do, but without the enormous crowds.
