Something I Have to Share- From Las Vegas
For the past week I have been in Las Vegas, the southwest, heart of much of the immigration debate; to attend a conference for work. My fellow conference goers and I started joking around the first day about how nice the overwhelmingly foreign cleaning staff, cab drivers, service workers were- they always said excuse me, please, and thank you. Many even went out of there way to provide good suggestions for restaurants and things; with respect for "good" and not for "expensive and impressive looking". Around day 3 though- it wasn't a joke anymore; it was an established way of being. The ONLY people in the entire town who have been remotely nice to any of the guests are foreign born. The American's in Vegas are short, rude, and decidedly not-helpful (unless they know they can make more $$$ off you). As an American-born, American citizen; I am ashamed. Endless debates criticize these foreigners- but perhaps we should live up to our standards, the standards of basic human decency- first. This has been an eye opening experience and while obviously not true everywhere or for everyone its been such a pattern while I'm here I had to share.
I'm all about this country and its people being as wonderful as they can possibly be; we owe it to out forefathers to be better than this. People from a foreign land understand this and are actually living by it out here...have we native born become so spoiled that we can be rude, intolerant, and manipulative? God, I hope not. And if we are- maybe we are trying to send the wrong people out of the country.

BF66389, I am sorry you had that kind of experience in Las Vegas. Sadly though your perceptions of the people in Vegas are pretty right on--rude, self centered, quick to size you up to see what they can get from you. No gratitude or decency. Just look at some of the Vegas posts and the people who post there.
I have noticed a huge difference in the people in Missouri, where I just moved. I hope it's just a Vegas thing but I don't know. What do the rest of you all think?

i guess you don't have the "pleasure" of living with these illegal immigrants. you never actually said they were illegal but that is what the debates are about. i do live close to and teach illegal children in school. after being here a couple of years the kids mostly join gangs. now, their parents work hard....but the second generation is generally useless.

This thread doesnt really belong in the NH forum. It has nothing to do with NH. You are more than welcome to take this topic to one of our other forums, Nevada or there are many other threads that deal with illegal immigrants, just not here. Sorry, I am going to close it.
