Texas to Lebanon
I live in San Antonio, TX and I just got a job in Lebanon (due to start 9/28), but I have no idea how to go about finding a place so far from home. Ideally I'd love to find a home to rent since I'll be coming with a hubby, three cats and two dogs (a lab/chow mix and a beagle).
Any thoughts?
The best thing I've seen so far is an awesome farmhouse in the Washington, VT area. Only about 50 miles away, but I'm used to 50 miles of flat TX road, so maybe the difference in area would be an issue...

My husband works in Lebanon. We settled near New London - about 25 minutes from Lebanon. There are lots of nice towns and all are different so visit and scope some out if you can. We moved from Annapolis in June - we have a great realtor...let me know if you want her name. 50 miles will seem a lot farther in snow, I think -- you might want to consider that before you jump in to such a long commute. :-)
Good luck to you!

OP - 50 miles of Vermont mountain roads will take three times as long as 50 miles of flat Texas roads in the SUMMER. In the winter they take longer. a lot longer. Find a place in NH near town.

Thanks for the offer, but we'll definitely have to rent. Buying just isn't an option for us right now. It's looking, though, as if renting won't be any easier- especially trying to set it up from here.
Are there any hotels or inns that rent out rooms by the month? We have some like that here in SA, but so far I'm not seeing that anyone does that there...

Remember that realtors have rental properties, too -- which might be the way to go if you prefer not being in an apartment complex. My husband rented a condo for a few months before the rest of us moved up here.

That would be wonderful, actually. As it stands, I'm going to have to come up first, but I need to bring my cats with me and the hubby will keep the puppies.
Yes, please, I would like the name of your realtor. Any help is greatly appreciated.

OP: If you have never lived & driven up north you will want to learn how to drive on ice. It is an aquirable skill. When I was a teenager up there we used to drive on open frozen parking lots to learn how to handle a car for stopping and going around a curve when it is icy. No matter how well-kept the roads are, there are always quick-freezes and slushy slippery conditions that don't get sanded and salted in time.
So when you move up there, actually take the time on one of the first icy days to learn this skill. It can save your life and your passengers.
It has to be practiced because when a car is caught in a slide, the weight and balance of the car as well as the tilt of the road will affect how it acts. When you know how your car will "feel" in a slide, you will be able to control it.
When stopping on ice you will want to diddle the brake and downshift, not slam the brake and hold it.

Move From TX
U problably know this by now but get ready for sticker shock on house prices
I moved up from Dallas. The area is great but $200K is a entry level home.
Also, living west of the river (VT) gets you into this nasty thing called state income tax.
