Many people I think have many misconceptions about coal... most of the coal that was burnt in the past was soft bitimous coal that created a lot of smoke and soot. Antracite coal is the hard coal that people burn today cause it burns hotter, longer, and produces hardly any smoke. Secondly the technology has improved greatly in terms of ventilation and prevention of carbon monoxide leakage so it is safe today unlike our parents and great grandparents. I am not forcing coal on anybody... in fact I hope most people do not use it so it remains cheap.

Pellets are good for bunkering cost and their ease of use but I read that their maintenance can get tiresome and if you have a power outage you are out of luck unless you have some sort of generator just for that.

Red face Coal & LUNG CANCER ???

Sorry for my ignorance on the subject......

I have read that areas, with coal mines, tend to have a high lung

cancer rates??

Would burning coal contribute to this as well?

Does anyone have info on this?

Thank you!

I believe you are referring to black lung... and yes coal miners to get this.

Burning coal does not result in black lung because the apparatus pipes out the bad fumes out of the house... the only thing that is comeing out of the coal burning stoker is the heat.

In the old days technology was poor and the coal stokers let out the carbon monoxide along with the heat.

now I think they're creating scrubbers now to clean the exhaust. So, coal may be cleaner to use these days than industial age, but I don't know that the mining of it is any better on the environment - it's pretty harsh.

Yea, I think of the mountaintop removal areas of WV everytime anyone mentions coal.
