This is a great thread! I have never had a Honey Crisp Apple but look forward to crunching into one this time next year. Thanks for the heads up.

We eat primarily Red Delicious or Granny Smith (shipped to Texas) and I can't wait to see my kid's faces the first time they pick one off a tree. I think they think all apples come out of a bag.

Val if I were going to be there longer, I would show you how to make my top secret Pumpkin Spice Whoopie Pies. When I move out there, you and I can have a "bake" day. But it has to be on a cold rainy or snowy day. I cant wait to bake on a cold day. You have no idea how disheartening it is to bake when it is hot outside....it takes something out of it, if that makes sense..lol
I used to like gala and fuji until I had a honey crisp! And I totally agree about baking on hot days -- it really isn't the same!

SO glad to hear your Fall trip has worked out, too!

I completely agree with you there Suzet! I had to bake last week, so as soon as the kids were up and out the door, I was baking like a fiend (thanks to a friend who gave me some of that Amish Friendship Bread starter!) It's just no fun to bake when it's warm as an oven outside! Suzet, once you're here, we'll all share our Yankee/New England recipes with you

My trainer and I were comparing apples one week, he had never had a Mac, and seemed to think 'delicious' actually had taste (sorry, Coffee! I think they taste like crunchy sand. They're lovely to look at, but flavor?....). He was surprised how good a mac tasted. Then he brought me a gala and a fuji. I think the gala was ok - tasted kinda like a mac, but the fuji wasn't nearly as good.

Many years ago I remember I used to leave an apple on the dashboard of my car, and at the end of the day the heat of the car would just about bake the apple! very tasty on the ride home.

I used to be a big fan of red and golden delicious, but now I find them to be too dry and... I don't know, grainy maybe? I find Mackintosh too mushy for anything but applesauce (but it EXCELS for that use!) I guess I like a versatile apple that I can eat, bake with or just dip into a bowl of caramel CoffeeTalk, you are gonna LOVE New England

We will love NE hands down, with or without the apples.

Our sons both LOVE fruit and I buy anywhere from 10 to 20 apples a week - year round as well as other fruit.

I have never actually tried a Fuji but I love the way Gala smell and I prefer to use them for apple butter. I agree, Valarie, Macs are a little mushy and I think they tend to crumble a bit.

OK after reading this thread, I need some apples with caramel suace.

Valerie, I would love to bake some NE recipes with you. I will show ya how to make my famous "twix bar cookies". They are yummy. I even make the caramel from scratch. What is the Amish Friendship Bread again?? I think you mentioned it a long time ago...but I dont remember what it was.

Wanna, I agree that the delicious apples dont taste so delicious. I want it all in my apples..lol. I want the snap, the juice, the smell. Yummy apples!!! LOL

I was watching some show a while back and they were talking with some 'expert' about Delicious apples. I found it very enlightening! He said that Delicious apples have been genetically tweaked for better appearance (shape, deeper red) which takes away from the taste. Sorta like commercial roses which have been tweaked for loner lasting which takes away from the scent (the scent coming from the actual decay process). No wonder Delicious apples don't taste the way they used to years ago.

Where is everyone's favorite place to pick apples and what are you favorite varieties for eating and cooking/baking?

I love the Butternut Farm between Rochester and Farmington it's so old fashioned. I pick the Jonamac's for Applesauce and applebutter. MMMMM good......

Talking Great thread & post! :0) THANK YOU TO ALL! :0) I LOVE APPLES! :0)

Great post WANNA!

Every single time THEY tweak something by altering it genetically

it changes the nutrient content & taste as well I do not

understand why THEY keep doing this, to things that go inside of our bodies

However, the APPLES from NEW ENGLAND taste so much better than from

other places!

Take care everyone!
