Default Working at Dartmouth, Where to Live?

Hi Folks,

Glad to finally be posting, I am on the job hunt looking all over the country, this is the best resource on the net for city info.

Considering a position in Hanover. I'm fresh out of college but don't necessarily need the college atmosphere. open to any surrounding areas or specific advice/opinions about hanover.

I'm a big outdoors guy and would love to be in close proximity to a nice lake and/or park...seem to be plenty in every direction! especially to the west.

I'm not going to be making much money so will probably be sharing a place...makes me think staying in the college area would be best. being able to ride my bike to work would be awesome but not necessary.

one question...should i be wary of pretentious dartmouth folk? never been in an Ivy League environment, I'm a midwestern dude where the elitist attitude does not fly. prefer to be able to mingle with women that will actually speak to me.

Thanks in advance, folks.

Yep, unfortunately people in general are pretty elitist. They're said to be less pretentious than some of the other Ivy League schools in that they don't really carry around Gucci purses or bling or drive fancy cars, it's more everyone carries around Nalgene bottles and wears J-Crew but they (or their parents) stilll pay $40,000/year for a name-brand-education. Dartmouth pretty much makes up that entire area and many alumni stay around afterwards so the locals aren't massively different. You'll probably find some normal, down-to-earth people but it will take awhile and in the meantime, getting accustomed to all the elitist folk can take some getting used to.

Outdoorsy stuff -- yes, there's tons of it. I personally don't understand since literally 7 months of the year it's frozen solid and another 3 months it's mud season, but apparently everyone up there thinks it's great & digs it.

Good luck.

My brother used to have a place in Enfield NH on Lake Mascoma and commuted to use the Dartmouth library. They loved it. It seemed like a nice little non-pretentious town.

Anywhere within 10 miles of Hanover would be just fine.
