Cigarette smoke is the one that kills me. I can tolerate cigar smoke easier. How are the laws in NH regarding smoking? I know Colorado outlawed it in public places statewide. Usually you see things like that at the municipal or maybe county level.

Captjob, actually my brother in law who lives in Marin County told me they do have a wood ban and if you burn wood on certain days you will get a fine or jail time!
Next is the tax on beef and then within the next three years are allocated driving days whereas you will be sent to jail if you drive on the day of the week you are not permitted too! Nazis and Communists are becoming more entrenched and slowly picking away all of our American Freedoms! These anal retentive environmental wackos will destroy our way of life in New Hampshire.

Reps to Comet and Capt., even if this site mandates that I 'have to spread some reputation around' before I can give it to either of you again

Hopefully NH will take a stand before it's too late.

I would venture to say that NH may have a growing movement to ban wood burning with emphasis on being green and and all that it entails, but it will quite some time in coming. On the other hand, your neighbor to the west, Vermont, even being a major wood user, is much more likely to see such an effort and laws enacted as we desperatly try to follow California's lead being their little cousin in thought and deed.

i apologize if 'm jumping in over my head, but here goes. i live in maine. maine did not ban outside wood boilers, just requires that any new installation meet epa emissions (be a wood gasification unit-dries out the wood before it burns). nh has followed suit as of jan 1 (i believe, it is happy hour, so my memory is not the best right now)
anyway- we have one of the old fashioned wood boilers, as do several of our neighbors. if you burn seasoned wood, there is no difference in the amount of smoke produced than any other form of wood heat. the problem is that when the outside wood boilers came out they were advertized as being able to burn anything- and people were doing just that- old railroad ties, green wood, trash, manure.... they also only had an 8 ft stack, so all that smoke (and there is more of it and very nasty smelling if you are burning junk) just wafted around the ground for everyone to enjoy. problems arose in built up areas where the houses are close together, creating the ban.
we burn only seasoned hard wood and lifted our stack above the roof line, plus we live on top of a hill above all our neighbors except one. we have no smoke issues, and have checked with our neighbors to be sure its not an issue for them either.
