We have a 1790's home and the chimney needs (at the very least) a good cleaning and to be re-built from the roof up. We may need it braced somehow for the winter to prevent it splitting any more if we cannot get it fixed this year. Can anyone recommend someone with the experience and know how to tackle the job? Thanks!

I don't know anyone in the area.. but you might want any roofer to place a slate and a cinder block on the top to prevent more water from entering.

And you will want a modern liner installed when the work is done. Tile liner......

I am guessing you need the old work torn down and using the same brick re-built. The mortar is probably gone. and leaking creosote past the outer brick into the walls.... Don't use it at all with wood fires if it is..

I don't have any recommendations, sorry. Good luck getting around the requirements of the Historical Society.

Default Historical society

I assume you have had this fixed. I suggest the local historical society would be a good place to ask for references to a qualified chimney builder.

the new poster revived the old thread because they had the same question, and hoped someone might be able to steer them toward help - rather than beginning a new thread on the same topic. that's who.
