I am sorry if I caused bad feelings also....I just have never heard anything good about the town. If you grew up there and say it's a nice place, then I believe you that your experience was different than what I have seen and heard. I do know several people that lived there over different periods of time and they have all told me nothing but bad things.... I myself have been there 5-6 different times - sometimes for a whole week or 2 at a time, sometimes for 2-3 nights and I have not had very many pleasant experiences. Maybe I was just in the "bad" sections of the town. I also saw (and smelled) some very unpleasant things in several stores and that is no exaggeration.
Maybe you are right and I was not in the best of areas that the town has to offer. It is pretty as far as the rural aspect. I guess it was far better back in the days that the mill was open and people had more work opportunities.
Either way....whether you love it there or not, it's ultimately up to the person who started this post to decide based on their research, advice and options and all I was doing was giving my opinion based on my experience and friend's experiences.
I do wish you the best of luck in your search for a new home!! It is a difficult decision to make when you're deciding where to live and I hope you find the perfect place for you and your family. : )

Thanks to all for their input. I'm being offered a full-time job that would pay well, so employment is not a problem. I plan on coming and checking the area out in a couple of weeks and will use your comments here in combination with my impressions to make a decision.
Thanks again for your candid insights, pro and con. It's a big help to myself and my family.

I've been reading these helpful posts. I'm a native of New Hampshire hoping to return soon. It is for certain that if people who can make a difference do not move in and boost the economy and morale of those in town, already, it could fall to nothing, from all I've read in forums and the town's own economic and development projections. Route 16 is a bear in inclement weather, always was, so, I know that can be a factor in drawing people to the town. Highway systems should, always, be considered first, but we know, they can be very last in any state. Governors want to keep budgets low and ignore the fact that good and well placed roads make for revenue. Also, these cities, like Berlin, with their low rent and property pricing, tend to be the placement areas for those not welcome in cities such as Concord, Manchester and others. The state and feds throw meager amounts of money at folks who need mental, physical and others issues addressed, but don't really seek a real solution. I've watched the prices of housing drop as much as 10K on a couple homes in just two months' time. For soon to be retirees, such as my husband and I, there's potential for a buy in Berlin, but if we're alone in our search, that must be factored in, too. Retirees can make a city grow and flourish, as many of you know. Thanks for all the input and I'll be reading further. deb
