I never had cable until moving north AW.... free TV just isn't an option up here as all I could pick up was snow.
they took away 56 and 38? oh my........
Creature Double Feature...LOL brings me back to the '60's. "The Blob" was the scariest movie I ever saw at that time.

In So. Fla. we have just had a whole week without airconditioning ~ big, big thing. It's supposed to stay the same temps (50's in early morning, 70's later) this whole upcoming week, which means I will be cooking Thanksgiving without A/C which is a huge thing.
When I visit my daughter (northern Mass.) in the winter, her apt. is always too warm for me. When we move (next summer) I think I'll like indoor temps around 68-70 at highest. I don't mind bundling up ~ in fact I like wearing clothes other than t-shirts!

LOL buck @ "back to the 60s"....
I get four stations with just an antenna but that is soon to change in February. The cable company won't come out to Fitzwilliam. They tell me it is not populated enough for them to make that investment. So soon I won't get any tv at all because I won't be purchasing any box thing. I tried dish tv but was unimpressed with the cost per service.
I am so fortunate. I have all these kids and we are all so diverse and when we are together we laugh, and talk, sing, play instruments, create. I don't watch enough tv to warrant that kind of bill. So I get my news and internet access from work, I love to check out YouTube, etc etc etc. When I am home - that's my sanctuary. I have so many hobbies and talents that I tend towards thsoe things at home.
My friends think I am isolated, but I don't agree. (I even own a cell phone) I am not a couch potatoe. I get all I need at work, my kids get all they need at school and on the weekends when we frequent FPU Library. My VCR/DVD works fine if we want to watch a movie. So I really won't miss the tv. But then...it is my nature to adjust positively.

thanks for the info on pellet stoves Buck - sounds like that would be a great option for us! and just for reference on the electric bills all, we are in Dallas and our a/c bills run about $400/mo. in the summer for a 2300 sq. ft. one-story home - that's if we keep it at 78! Once you're down to shorts and a tank, you're kind of out of luck, but in the cold, you can keep piling the clothes on!

My newest gift has been a godsend. My sister bought me a heated mattress pad. I find no discomfort at keeping the house thermostat set at 55 overnight, or 62 when I'm feeling like being extravagant during waking hours, that I'm not wearing sweats.
I'm sure I'll need a bit more heat when its time to snow-blow the driveway in January + February, in the minus temperatures.
I got a wood stove, but it doesn't do a very good job of heating the entire house, since it on the first floor and away from the 2 story part of the house. It makes a good backup, and helps in the really cold weather, to keep the boiler from running constantly, which adds significantly to the electric bill.

I like the heat! I can always turn on the hose for a quick cool down. Back in the day, it would have meant a jump into the pool. We don't have AC. We've never needed it. I think a $400 electric bill is horrid.... glad it's not me.

JFR - I think I could live with that! With those settings, what kind of heating bills do you get?
