Literacy volunteers in NH?
Happy Day, everyone! One thing I have always wanted to do is to teach literacy on a volunteer basis. I'm wondering how the volunteer "atmosphere" is in NH... are there lots of opportunities for such? I did read that social services are not as available in NH as in other states, which makes me wonder about the volunteer opportunities.
Does anyone have any info on this?
Thanks for any help!

The Manchester Public Library runs a volunteer literacy tutoring program. I am sure there are others, I am just not aware of them at this point.

Best of luck to you, JoanD'Arc. In CA I voluntarily taught K-elementary students English who were new to the US and would continue to do it here but have not found the same pressing need. Your efforts are commendable. Volunteering is an excellent and selfless thing to do!!

The lack of social services should actually mean more need for volunteers. Volunteering to help someone learn to read/write would be a wonderful way to change someone's life. A good way to find a suitable volunteer opportunity near you is to check out:
VolunteerMatch - Where Volunteering Begins
Hope that helps!

thank you, NH2008, you are right! I will ck it out - just because I may not see the need for it in my immediate district does not mean there is no need.

I wanted to thank Annabelle for that link she gave you, Joan D'Arc, but, though I haven't repped her before, I'm told I have to "spread it around." So, thanks for asking the question, Joan, and thanks for answering Annabelle, Lisag, NH2008. Volunteering is in my near future, too.
