What are your THANKSGIVING TRADITIONS!!??

What are your plans??? What are you doing???

Since we have some people on the forum that have moved in recent

years from California, Georgia, etc.Anything you are doing a bit differently

now that you moved to New Hampshire, compared to where you came

from??

And for the others, what & or how do you CELEBRATE this GREAT

AMERICAN HOLIDAY!!

What do you cook?? Do you have relatives come over??

I believe GREGW told us last year, how his niece cooked the turkey

over an open fire, I'm not sure but I thought that was sooo

COOL!

I would love to hear more about that!! How long did that take??

What else did she do???

Hi Country!,

I like to deep-fry a turkey and compare it to my wife and mother in-laws preference of an oven baked turkey.

Every year they fire up the oven early in the morning, prep and cook all day while me and the boys just sink a 20 pounder in the oil and in 60 minutes, presto, the best tasting, cooked turkey around!

We often do a tast off and of course, my possee always chooses my bird over oven cooked; however, I still havent transfered the traditionalists over yet.

Then we adjurn to the park across the street and play a marathon round of "slaughter house" (Dodge-Ball) until someone gets hurt or passes out!.

Fun.

Gee, I never had thanksgiving in NH! My mother always took my two bio-brothers and me to our grandmother's place in VT (and my step-father took my step-brother and -sisters to his parents in Hillsboro). so.. I had a VT thanksgiving.

The only thing I can think of that seemed at all different from the classic turkey, stuffing etc.. was that my grandmother usually had a small dish of divinity on the hutch. Only time I ever had the stuff. Man! that'll rot your teeth!

For those who've never encountered divinity: it looks like white fudge but it's mostly whipped egg-whites, karo syrup and vanilla - sometimes with a walnut on top. fairly chewy and definately too much sugar!

We're not actually spending our first Thanksgiving in NH, in NH! We're heading to PA to my in-laws. My MIL is a fabulous cook (as DD says, "Grammy's making a FEAST!")

One of my favorite dishes from Grammy Pam is a fresh cranberry relish - it's fresh cranberries, oranges and apples (skin on!), pecans, sugar...) - it's SO good. She also dumps a can of cranberry sauce from the can onto a place for those who like to see the tin-can rings in their food

We've experimented with deep-friend turkey one year in Florida at my dad's and step-mom's...it was really good!

My current favorite turkey-baking method is in a roasting pan *completely* wrapped in heavy-duty foil and in a 500F oven for a few hours. Sounds bizarre (and you do take the foil off to let it brown at the end) but it's sooooo juicy.

This year-we are not traveling. Our Thanksgiving will be:

A 5k in the morning.
Pizza, Beer and Football.
Perhaps Funspot in the afternoon.

We are very happy not to be traveling and are looking forward to a 4 day weekend just for us-with no other family/responsibility involved.

What a nice thread idea Country!

We try and get together with my parents and siblings and their kids every Thanksgiving (not too hard to do since we all live in NH). We have the traditional dinner. Every year my mother forgets something and we get a big laugh - like the corn or peas or rolls or salt & pepper or dessert. One year she mistakenly put the turkey in the oven upside down (wondered why it was wobbly in the pan). It was the best tasting turkey we ever had.

A new tradition we started a few years ago: Before we start eating, we go around the table and each of us says what we're thankful for.

Then, we eat too much, can't fit in dessert, retire to the TV room for football and snoring.

This year, just like last... my father in law, his new wife, and my family will get together for the typical Thanksgiving day feast. My husband usually takes out our German Shorthair Pointer to go Pheasant hunting, it's their bonding time!

I am looking forward to being closer, hopefully NEXT THANKSGIVING to familly, where my daughter can run around the house with her cousins and having the house full of Aunts, Uncles, and cousins. That was always my family tradition before moving 2800 miles away... I miss the noisey, busy holidays and can't wait to get them back!

I do hope everyone is having a great lead up to their TURKEY DAY! Any one have any great recipes they want to share about their Turkey Day? Stuffing? Can't resist Apple pie?
