There are actually quite areas in Londonderry with both public water/public sewer. Most if not all of the condos in town, plus much of the north end of town, approaching Manchester, along Rte 28, and the areas closest to the old dump. Of course Murphy's Law says that if somebody wants to buy in Londonderry and really wants public water and sewer, the perfect house will become available immediately after inspections have been completed and signed off on, and final bank commitment has been given.....

Parts of Derry have water brought in from Pennichuck and sewer systems. The majority of homes, tho', are private.

They brought the water lines down our road and in the initial installations, they were offered to all homes in the lines immediate vicinity. If you chose not to go that route, it was a few thousand to get it installed later.

I don't know how Londonderry is set up. The people I know that live there have private wells and septic systems.

Either way...contaminated wells are VERY common and treatment for them is equally as common. Bacteria is generally easy to kill and I imagine the salt runoff is removable (my guess is carbon filter?) Either way- a company that specializes in this should be able to help you out for MUCH less than the cost of a new well or probably even hooking into public water.

In the meantime if you need to fill any water jugs for drinking or cooking if you're worried about it; you're welcome to fill up here- we're only about 2 miles away.

Thanks so much - that is super nice and generous. The seller actually left us a cooler and a bunch of those huge bottles of Monadnock water. We did know about the water quality issue in advance. It was on the disclosure form, so our offer took the price of a new well into consideration. I'm just frustrated because it will be a few weeks before they can get to us, and of course if we could have gotten onto town water I would have loved to save that money and have someone else worry about the water quality.

The problem is that we have a really old dug well that doesn't go that deep, so even if they chlorinate it the bacteria could keep getting in - and because of our location we just get a lot of salt. They could do a whole-house filter but it sounds like this type of well is just outdated for our location. I know this is one of the last houses on the street with a dug well.

Sounds like town water doesn't go to houses and is at capacity anyway...bummer.
