off grid living in Coos county
I am interested in living off the grid in Littleton in Coos couny. Is there any cabins or cottages for rent that do not have electricity? If so how much and where? Is there any abandoned properties that I could aquire that would allow me to do this? I rather not pay rent as I only get $1183 on Social Security Disability. My money would be tied up in paying a mover to get my property from Winsted Connecticut to whereever the cottage is.
Being I am a Gaian, I rather live a simple life in harmony with Gaia.
I am interested in using Solar and or Wind power for the limited power needs, Gas (propane) for cooking, heating, lighting and refrigeration.
Becaiuse I am legally blind... I cannot drive. However, I do have an adult trike that would allow me to get to the local stores.
I am quite handy and do have the tools and skills to do many projects on my own.

Hi B'ichela - We're in Littleton - I'm not sure if you're looking at the Littleton area, which is in Grafton County or if you are looking in Coos County?
If it is Littleton, I can't think of anything off-hand that describes what you're looking for, although on the outskirts there might be something, I have no idea how you would go about finding such a place, though, other than realtors, who would most likely only know of places to rent
If you were to find something fitting your description, I'm not sure an adult trike would get you where you would need to go to get to the local stores, either. If you were out in the "boonies", so to speak, you would have quite a distance to travel on it and in the winter the roads would create quite a challenge for such a vehicle.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help....perhaps someone else more familiar with this area could help you or someone in Coos County will pop in with some ideas.

Ah! sorry about the mixup with the counties. I am aware that the roads could be a problem. How hilly is Littleton?

I have one quick question. There is a few townships in New Hampshire. all of which are in Coos county. How do townships get started? what type of government do they use? One teeny one is Odell.

Littleton is pretty hilly.....we live on one of the streets off Main Street - a friend used an altimeter and we're 241' higher in elevation than Main Street....this spring, Main Street snow had melted, we still had quite a bit in our yard
I personally think getting to the stores would be quite a challenge with the adult trike unless you were right along the Main Street.....but then I don't think you wouldn't be able to be off the grid......

You could always get a house in town and have the electricity disconnected. That way you would be in range of the shopping while still being "off the Grid".

Odell, Like by Stark and Dummer? The town has only 4 roads that I can think of. It isn't a town even. NH has several Places like this through out the state. Mainly in the north country, but Seacoast has several as well. Your Taxes are a lot lower in these places but acquiring land in them is hard. Most are Grants. So that makes it near impossible. Can be done but the legal fees will Cost you mare than the land.
Oh and Most have no form of government. Normally they are very dependant upon the state for roads getting plowed etc. They do pay taxes like all of us though.
