Increase state gas tax by
The morning paper has a note about a bill sponsored by Rep David Campbell (D - Hillsborough) to raise the state gas tas (currently 19.6 cents) by 5 cents per year for the next three years. The total would then be 34.6 and NH would have the third highest gas tax in the nation (CT is 37 and WA is 36). MA is 21, ME is 27.6, VT is .20. Many people along the border would cross to save money on gas in other states...
Motor Fuel Excise Tax Rates
The fed gas tax is 18.4 cents. At $1.89 per gallon, we pay a 25% sales tax on gasoline (real price is $1.51; taxed price is 1.89). If Rep Campbill's bill passes, the same gallon of gas I bought yesterday would go from $1.89 to $2.04. The sales tax would then be 35% ($.184 for the Feds, $.346 for NH, and $1.51 for the actual gas).
Another way of looking at it is Rep Campbell wants to raise the gas tax by 76% (a $.15 increase on a basis of $.196 is 76.5%).
Given the recession, I'd vote no. People do not need to have to spend more for gasoline. For my family, we already pay an estimated $552/yr in NH state gas taxes (3 cars). This bill would raise that to $975/yr.
If I lived in his district, I'd vote against David Campbell in the next election for even proposing this. Does he realize there is a recession?
Besides, isn't the Federal bailout supposed to be for infrasctructure such as roads and bridges...

This will definitely have an impact with regard to how many miles people travel. I wouldn't say this is a good thing, and they should only raise it by a much smaller amount if they have to at all.

Yes. And Nh elects a governor every 2 years.
I still have one of Gov Lynch's political signs in my garage from a few years ago. It states: "Vote Lynch, stop the Coburn gas tax". He campaigned on no gas tax increase. Let's see if he vetoes this if the democrats in the state house and state senate pass it....

We will see... Tough times are everywhere right now. Hopefully the gas tax will not go up much if they do pass anything. That guy from Hillsborough is loony if he thinks we should increase the gas tax by that much. He should focus more on Hillsborough issues.

The sad thing is that 14 towns in Cheshire County now have equalized tax rates of over 20.0 per thousand. Tax rates seemed to go up in 3/4 of all NH towns between 2007 and 2008. The spending has really gotten out of hand.

You're completely right. Spending is out of control. We need to send a message in 2010 that enough is enough. Hopefully we can get at least the state level spending under control again.

Is there an easy place to see what % of taxes goes to the state and what % goes to the town (of property taxes). So far I am VERY happy with how my town spends their money; its on REAL services- good schools, good fire, good police, good clerk, and not a lot of worthless junk. In fact- I've seen the town clerk take actions that no-doubt saved A LOT of other people's time when we first moved in...that's how it should be.
So I'm interested to see how much goes to each entity.
As for an increased gas tax, its really just a hidden tax that most people will be too dumb to notice (and they'll blame Exxon instead). The ONLY good that could come out of it is a reminder to people that conserving is a good thing; amazingly as soon as gas dropped below $4/gallon- people suddenly forgot it had ever happened.

well.... PropertyTaxRates gives a breakdown for each town of how much goes to town tax, local education, state education, county tax and total tax. Is that what you want?
