Talking Henniker vs Littleton?

Hello! I'm just wondering if anyone would give me some differences between Henniker and Littleton? * Besides location *

When DH and I were out there visiting in October, we really liked Henniker, Sutton, the areas of Andover and Salisbury...and I was wondering, besides the winters and snow amounts - what is the difference in town atmosphere - or anything else that you can tell me about, between Henniker and Littleton.

I've read some old threads, but new information is always great! We are looking more for town than a "city".

Well, the big difference between Henniker and Littleton is that Henniker is a College town and Littleton is not. Henniker has one of the highest equalized tax rates in the state (on par with Kenne). Littleton has slightly lower taxes. In terms of size, Henniker and Littleton are fairly similar in that regard. In terms of location, both are close to a major Interstate. Henniker is within 5 miles of I-89 and I-93 bisects a portion of Littleton. I would say Littleton is more business friendly compared with Henniker. Henniker is also close to a regional center (Concord) while Littleton can feel more isolated to many people.

Littleton is a very nice little town in face we had a super dinner at Baliwicks tonight I agree though with the isolated feeling. There does seem to be a lot of "special" people that never leave Littleton and can make there life just never leaving which to me is odd but ....if you don't know anything different well

I know many people who live in NH and in other areas of the Appalachians that like to stay close to family and roots. I find this to be a rather good thing because many reinvest in their communities. In other parts of the country everyone leaves the rural areas to decay and it is depressing.

Although the population of each town is within 1100 of each other (Henniker 5000+, Littleton 6100+) Henniker would be considered a much smaller town then Littleton. Littleton has become a mini hub of the area and, being such, has attracted more centrally located commercial establishments and retail outlets.

The commercial base of Henniker is mostly keyed to New England Collage students. Larger or more specialized purchases require a trip to Concord or the Manchester area.

Thank you everyone for your responses. We really did like Henniker in our recent trip, but at this point..if we end up trying to move now..we will have to go where jobs are based. There is a job prospect for me in Littleton.. but which location do you think would be better for a blue collar job availablility? I know it is tough to say in this economy, but any discussion or thoughts would help .

In general, a more variety of blue collar jobs are going to be found where the population centers are. Those would include: Nashua, Manchester, Portsmouth, Dover, Concord, Rochester, Lebanon, Keene, etc.
Littleton is basically a regional center that serves as a hub for a larger rural area of northern NH. Littleton has seen more commercial growth over the years compared to other towns, but I am not sure I know the details about other parts of the local economy there.

Did one of our posters from Littleton say that a new proposed development was going up on Manns Hill Road? What are the details on that?

Slalom posted this link in the small town thread: Town of Littleton New Hampshire

I haven't heard anything lately, but I haven't been out and about much, too busy working.

Right now the big thing is the Main Street Reconstruction Project that is supposed to be getting underway in a few days and run thru Nov. 13th, I think.
