Default Time to Take Down Your Birdfeeders & Save a Bear

All,

After reading it in the newspaper and in a few fish & game newsletters I receive I figured I'd post it up here: Now that spring is coming we should all take down our birdfeeders because as bears wake up (hungry) they will go to the feeders for food.

Not only does this draw the bears in closer to our homes (scary for us perhaps)- it also puts them at risk of being hit by cars and the like. It's been shown that bears that have the least human contact- live the longest.

Also realize that now that the ground is no longer snow covered- the birds no longer need the supplemental food source. Likewise while some supplemental feeding of birds is good to replace what used to be feeding ground (where your house is) you don't want the birds becoming dependant on you alone for feeding.

Thanks for the tip. I just refilled my bird feeders today without giving it a second thought. Strangely, I wasn't able to get out to them during the winter, so I overfilled them. It's another case of, "too late, better compensate."

Don't think you'll have too many bear issues in Seabrook. Although last year there was a bear hanging out in Greenland for a few days.

I actually saw one fairly late into the fall this year. It was crossing our road about two miles north of my house- ran into the woods as soon as it saw my car when I crested a hill. Not a baby- but not a big bear; and ligher in color (brown) instead of a dark black.

I think I'll feed the birds and see if it attracts a bear of two. They might thin out the pack of stray dogs and coyotes wandering around here.
