Default Question about a propane furnace pilot light

It is an old furnace (around 20 years old). Apparently the pilot went off and needs relighting. The company is charging $150 for this. Is it normal for it to go off? Is that something we could do ourselves or should we pay the company to do it?

Thanks.

Tough Question, Merjolie8,

If you don't understand how the appliance operates or, are not familiar with the proper procedures, it's really difficult to safely answer your questions.

The answer can be as simple as, yes, you can re-light it. The opposite end of the argument is, NO WAY. Unless you know why the pilot light went out or, have the answers to other questions such as.........Was the system running before the pilot went out? Is there a problem which caused the pilot light to extinguish? Are you out of fuel? Or, best of all, do you have a leak? You really do need to know the answers first.

I have to consider liability. So, I'll tell you to get the gas company to re-light, which would eliminate you from the responsibility also.......just in case. And, you can look over the serviceman's shoulder for a quick question and answer period, for your education and better understanding.

if you are comfortable re-lighting a pilot, give it a shot. if it doesn't stay lit, next step is to replace the thermocouple, which is roughly $150 . could be that is what you were quoted.

good luck
