Cindy- I highly suggest getting sandwhiches from Market Square Market in Hollis and eating them on the benches in the middle of the little monument square across the street. A good "break" for lunch while you're checking out the town.
And you have to checkout the very neat/historic cementary behind the church (right next door)...and our nice library...and...and...and.

pssst.... You're also checking out Amherst, right? You'll want to find your way to "The Village" and pull in to Moulton's Market. Head to the back of the store to order your sandwiches (or wraps, or quiche or other daily specials) and while they're prepping it for you, visit the soup counter (there are usually 5 or 6 varietys to chose from). If it's chilly or raining, eat inside the store, but if it's a nice day, walk over to the Village Green (check out all the very interesting and charming historic homes along the way) and sit yourself in one of the park benches. You might decide then and there that Amherst is the place for you

I'm glad you are considering Dover. My daughter teaches grade 6 there at the middle school. She has taught in 3 or 4 other communities and is impressed with the school system. They must be doing something right as my gdaughter has been accepted into 4 colleges for the Fall of 2009 including UNH and Northeastern. UNH accepted her into their honors program. They love Dover as it is close to the coast - about a 15 or 20 minute drive, and also close enough to Boston for lots of cultural stuff. Your kids would probably love the Science Museum there. Dover has lots of good restaurants and the Newington Mall is only about 15 minutes drive as well. Hope you get a chance to see some of this town while you are in Northern New England next summer.

For the record, Amherst isn't my hometown... I live and work in Londonderry (which I love but it seemed you were seeking towns on the west side of the Merrimack River) in order to be closer to the larger hospitals. This area of southern NH has a nice variety of nice towns for you to check out--can't wait to hear your thoughts once you're here for you visit
