Anything annoying about Keene?
I currently live in northwest Florida, and am annoyed by all of the billboards that I am seeing here (along with many other things). I was wondering if there are any billboards in Keene. This may be a stupid question, but I am originally from Maine where billboards were illegal....just thought that NH might be similar.
Is there anything about Keene that aggravates you? I ask because in all of my research, everything in Keene seems amazing... ...almost too good to be true. I'm looking to move when I'm done with college, and am hoping that Keene will be the place for me!

Billboards are not illegal in NH, however I believe they are illegal in Vermont.
I think they have a billboard or two on Rt 12 in Keene-if memory serves me correctly. I am sure someone will correct me if they are no longer there. At times there may have been a billboard or two on West Street as well. I have not been to Keene since early fall last year and I am going by what I remember from then. However, there is certainly not any overabundance of billboards in Keene.
Have you ever been to Keene? Perhaps you should visit a few times to see if you like it before moving there. What do you mean by "everything in Keene seems amazing"? Perhaps if you elaborate, we can tell you if those things you consider amazing are in fact true.
I personally like the Monadnock area-the area has a lot to offer-especially if you like the outdoors.

Keene is a college town with many local businesses. However, I would be aware of the high property taxes there. Some of the outlying towns close to Keene have lower taxes.

I'm originally from Maine and am ready to settle down in a place that I could see myself staying forever. I've had my fill of Florida. Sand everywhere, Billboards everywhere (I counted atleast 10 this morning in just about 1 mile), confederate flags, spring breakers, hot hot humidity. I just don't find this place physically attractive at all and it is effecting my happiness now.
I really want a place with 4 seasons, in New England, with much history, and that reminds me of my home state. I'm looking for a smaller town to raise kids (don't have any yet), but that is close enough to a large city for weekend trips (Keene fits the bill). Not to mention the houses look affordable. Overall, Keene just reminds me of my home town in central Maine, but it would still be a fresh start.
I would especially be excited about all of the hiking opportunities, fresh water, and open fields outside of town. You definately don't find that here in NW Florida (salt water, no open fields locally, not even any good parks, and you would have a hard time avoiding all the snakes). I'm just ready to get out of here, and settle down with something familiar. I'm hoping to visit sometime in the next couple years....still not done with college...ugh..

Approaching Keene from the west, there is one billboard on Rt 9 that I can remember, other than that, really can't think of any more or at least any that are one right after the other on the roadside.
Since 1968 VT's Act 250 prohibits privately owned, off-premises signs and restricts the size, height, and distance from the road of on-premises signs. Some towns have more restrictive sign ordinances.

Peterborough, Jaffrey, Chesterfield or Winchester
You might look into Peterborough, Jaffrey, Chesterfield or Winchester NH as well.
All are nice towns, and Jaffrey , Peterborough would be haflway between Keene and within driving distance of Manchester --as well for work/employment etc

Keenite reporting in here,
Keene fits what you've mentioned. Cool college town, great place to raise kids, Boston is under 2 hours away, numerous hiking/outdoor recreation opportunities, 4 seasons, many cultural events, etc. I moved here from the rat-race known as Southern California and am quite happy.

I wouldn't mind living about 20 minutes east of Keene, but that city has some of the highest taxes in New Hampshire, and some of the most restrictive zoning laws anywhere. The town is not known for courtesy from its police department, and we've been hearing about more and more corruption from the courts and town government out there. I've known several people who have moved out there, been quite disappointed, and moved back.
