Default A tale of an urban pond

Off South Willow street behind Osram Sylvania sits and unassuming pond with a bit of NH history. Currently called Nutts Pond after Commodore George Washington Morrison Nutt

NUTT FAMILY GENEALOGY - History and Genealogy of Manchester - Hillsborough County - New Hampshire

Before it was called Nutts pond, it was known as Fort pond, John Starks father determined a need for a defense and erected a Garrison, aptly named Starks Fort

all that remains is the cemented opening of the old well

In the 50's and 60's Nutts pond was a poplular swiming hole and even had a concession stand much like Crystal lake, but continually high bacteria counts despite chlorination eventaually closed it to public swiming.

A walk around the small paved trail reveals nature reclaiming itself from the railroad tracks that ran through the area

Though volunteers do two cleanings annually and it is a city property, Nutts pond is not on par with it's sister Dorrs to the north. Large areas are glass and trash filled

Likely due to the congregation of teens in the So. Willow area ( though I am sure careless adults share some of the blame)

Still it is a pleasure to see children enjoy a good time there
