Thanks for the heads up, NH! You have been very helpful. Thanks for the tips on the local architects. I may be picking your brain on other stuff in the near future. You're the best!

The whole New London area is nice. And we are leaving it The hospital is scary. A couple of scary incidents we had at the emergency room combined with friends' experiences now sends us to Concord. The fact my middle school child will need 2 buses and an hour to get to a school 20 minutes away is a big push. If you want to do any shopping you need to head north to West Lebanon or south to Concord/Manchester. Give on on chinese food or a halfway decent pizza. The lack of building inspector in New London is not a good thing. I worked for an electrician for a time and some of the things builders have been getting away with is amazing. If you buy a house I would recommend calling Clear View Home Inspections 603-938-2299 as he is the only inspector we know of in the area who will give you a reliable report. Unlike so many others he is thorough and will not gloss over issues to help the agent make a sale. Oh and New London Agency - don't get me started. Lets see what else drives me nuts, um we can see 2 cell phone towers from our house and still not get reception. Many areas cannot get DSL. The small town politics is beyond frustrating. The only food store Hannafords is very odd. Thankfully it is a Hannafords now, it used to be worse. You cannot get into the parking lot before noon. Every elderly person in town hits Hannafords and the Post Office next door every morning. OK some good things: The New London library is wonderful (only a $30 fee per year if you are not a NL resident). As a NL resident you do get access to their little beaches which are nice. Plus if you ski or boat you have immediate access.

Thank you, lucyem.
As it turns out, I recently stayed nearby for a few days and found out some of what you are talking about. We now have switched directions and are looking at places a bit further south, near Hopkinton. My family has decided that New London is a bit "out there" and some of the issues you spoke of made my ears perk up. I need to be closer to Concord and Manchester for my job prospects. New London is a beautiful town and the area is really pretty, but it's just too isolated for my family.
Thank you all for the info. This forum has been invaluable to me. If you weed out some of the stuff you can find people who really care to give you unbiased info. You all ROCK!
I'll start a new thread when I narrow down my choices.
Thanks!
Bry

Hopkinton was high on my list before I settled in New London.

I spent 4 fabulous years in New London attending Colby-Sawyer College. Th town is very nice, gorgeous weather all summer but like the Arctic in the winter. Go 1 exit north or south and it's completely different, New London is generally colder and windier.
There are a LOT of retirees in New London and it really seems like they do "roll up the sidewalks" by 8pm. Consequently things in town "slant senior", when I was in school there from 90-94 the local cable TV service still didn't carry MTV.
Job commute-wise you're about 30 minutes to the Lebanon NH auto dealerships (Exit 18 & 19) but you have a zillion choices once you are there.
2 great restaurants, Peter Christians right in town, and The Flying Goose Brew Pub just south towards Exit 11 (NL is between exits 11 & 12). Pizza Chef in town is fine but it's just your basic New England Grek Style Pizza place.
My buddy Jay is actually the Vice Principal at Kearsarge Regional HS.
Really, it's a great area IMO.

I'm another Cape Codder looking to move ....to NH ... Most likely New London or Jackson...
New Hampshire ... your post was great ... I Live in Brewster on Cape Cod and it's actually really nice ... I may always keep my place here ... but NH is calling me!
Can you compare New London to Jackson... I have never been to New London but everyone tells me to go there ... I love the idea of low taxes ... but the Cape is actually very low Brewster = 5.49/1000 and Chatham 3.50/1000 ... one of the cheapest areas in MA ... AND .. you can still get a house here for 350k ( I'm a Realtor!)
But it is missing the Mountains for me .... Does anyone know where I could get photos of New London?
Cheers all ..

Flipflopdreamer - In addition to New London I suggest you check out some of the towns North of the Notch such as Lisbon, Landaff, Franconia and Littleton. Just take I-93 until you see signs for Littleton then go exploring.
Please PM me for more information.

Hi Gregw ...
I have not figured out how to post a Private message :-(
But I will be sure to check out those areas?
I am looking for a place that will be good for weekly rentals...as I cannot move there full time yet... so it needs to be in a resort area - but not a resort-
Many thanks,
