Don't get me started on my societal ignorance rant again...
...Ok, too late, here it is:
"People" know what stoned and gay mean and have a fairly easy time taking sides on the issue and getting angry.
"People" do not know what Net Present Value, Inflation, Return on Investment, or Opportunity Cost mean; and therein lies the problem.
The level that discussion needs to occur at to really determine the best course of action on fiscal issues just isn't understood by most people and therefore they have no interest in it.
I've noticed the level of understanding is higher up here in NH than in many places I have been; but still not where it needs to be.

Obama's visit
I am not sure if this belongs on that political thread (which I can't find), so mods, feel free to move it.
I (unfortunately) don't live in NH, but have been hoping to move there as soon as I can.
I am really curious if any of you, or your friends/relatives, etc went to town hall meeting with Obama and what was the mood there, how do people feel about his Health Care plan, etc.
Basically, I am very interested to get any kind of first-hand knowledge about what happened at that meeting.
Thanks

I did not attend. I entered the lottery but did not win tickets. I have friends who attended. Two who actually got inside and many who protested outside. Everyone that I personally know who attended are opposed to his proposals or any kind of proposal that is currently being discussed. From what I have seen on the news, You Tube and political forums I frequent it was a mixed crowd outside , there were people bussed in and a lot of out of state plates in the parking lot. I am opposed to any further government interference in our healthcare. We do not need what is being discussed by Obama, the house or senate.
There is a debate as to whether or not the audience was planted. I find it interstesting that the very first person in the audience Obama calls on is a democratic state rep who in his question gives a dig to republicans. The second or third speaker was a little girl complaining about "mean signs". Two speakers were Portsmouth school teachers/employees-one with a huge peace sign necklace on. There were two people who called themselves republicans and asked softball questions in my opinion. I am a conservative independent who thinks government should stay out of my life and my wallet and am fed up with all politicians-democrats and republicans. I did not vote for Obama or McCain- I voted third party and have for the last 3 elections.
I do know many people who tried to get tickets and I have heard that our congressional offices did have control over a certain number of tickets so of course most of those would go to democratic operatives just as would be the case if republicans were in control-most would go to their operatives.

I also applied for tickets. I didn't win so I attended a watch party across the street. I saw some MA and ME plates but those states are only a few minutes away. I would have applied for tickets to an event in those states as well.
As for the healthcare reform, I don't think the president's plan goes far enough. Call me a socialist (I'm not) but my health is not for-profit and neither should yours. We are worth more than that. Not to metion it would save loads of money. Google it.

Oh well that settles it. Why didn't the President just come out and say that at one of his many pressers lately? If only his highly paid cadre of political geniuses had just suggested that he tell the American people to just "Google it", why this wonderful piece of legislation would clearly have all the support it needs for bipartisan success.

Let me just state that I think our current system is a joke....the costs are ridiculous.
That said, this is quite simply not the government's job or role. This is another in road for the government to further restrict our freedoms.
When YOU (not directed at anyone in particular) and the other good citizens are paying for my health care then you and the government have a very vested interest in my lifestyle choices. If I eat fast food, if I drink, if I don't exercise, if I engage in risky behavior like rock climbing or skydiving....etc. etc. etc., then I am raising the health care costs of the whole. YOU are paying for it.
Do you really think the government will just leave me alone and let me live my life as I see fit, or do you think they will intrude in my life by offering "incentives", or requiring extra costs, etc. to bring my lifestyle in line with average health care cost? Do you really want the government asking about or attempting to "influence" your personal lifestyle choices? Is that in line with the Founders' visions, with the constitution? I think not.
