Default New Hampshire Weather

What is the weather generally like in New Hampshire all year? Does it get extreme weather a lot (i.e. tornadoes, earthquakes, blizzards, etc.)?

Much of NH is free from most extreme weather events. The trend has been toward more flooding events over the past several years, however. Extreme heat is rare, and extreme cold is confined to the far north and mountainous areas during the lengthy winters.

Except for the tornado that came through last summer, I would say that the majority of NH's weather is pretty tame. We get thunderstorms from time to time (occasionally we see a phenomenon called "thunder snow", a snowstorm that has thunder and lightening). Snowstorms, and the occasional ice storm get lots of newstime, especially when it shuts down power for much of the state for days on end...

Well, the weather sucks right now. I thought summer was pretty much here but it's felt like Mid April all month.

Yeah, it's not like California where you get two sunny days, then two weeks of solid earthquakes.

The higher elevations can have very volatile weather in NH. Seasoned hikers and those exploring the backcountry know to always be prepared to storms and cold weather at any time during the year. The "tamest" weather is generally found in the valley areas of NH. Those locations tend to have the lightest winds overall.

Default my weather joke

My new england weather joke.

There are 4 seasons in New England.

1) getting ready for winter
2) winter
3) cleaning up from winter
4) summer

Summer is only 2 weeks long but it is spread out over 3 months.

My Dad in Mass. is telling me his furnace is still kicking on at night this past week.

**************
I do miss NH and its 4 seasonal weather.

I miss the fall and county fairs.
I miss spring and the excitement of that first day when the leaves and grass start to grow.
I miss the winter after a snow and the quietness when outside.
I miss summer and the various weather days from 60 to 98+ deg.

I don't miss fall and all the leaves and prepping for winter
I don't miss winter and occasional bitter cold days in the single digits
I don't miss Spring and all the cleaning and repairing from winter and the waiting and waiting for the flowers to bloom.
I don't miss summer and the inability to make any plans without the changing weather ruining your day.

That's what makes New Englanders and especially Granite Staters a hardy bunch

We have WYSIWYG weather. What You See Is What You Get.

I agree with Granite Stater. Mountain weather is very changeable. I lost a friend last year to a storm in Franconia Notch. He went winter hiking and froze to death after getting caught in a blizzard. I know this is an extreme but winter hikers or snowmobilers should carry an emergency help beacon when in the deep woods or mountains.

The rest of the time the weather varies for a beautiful day like yesterday to a freezing drizzle in the winter.

Funny, I thought the four seasons were:

Winter
Still Winter
Almost Winter
Road Construction

That being said, it has been very mild this year so far.
