as the dry weather has allowed the flying insects to invade everywhere, i was wondering how different parts/people in new hampshire deal with all the flying insects. ignore them, insect repellant, tiki torches, bugs zappers, citronella candles, other ways?

What kinds of flying insects? Mosquitoes or just the generic little insects that fly around in the grass/woods?

I've found those lanterns with the little tea candle and the pad on top (I think they are made by Off) repel pretty much everything. I've put 2 on my deck and haven't seen a mosquito all year up there. Likewise I also have 2 citronella buckets (the cheapest ones I can find) just for nice lighting...but I'm sure they help as well.

We have some water on our property (bedrock spring fed, not stagnant swamp) and I throw some of those mosquito dunks in there...we've had very few biting anything since I've done that.

I don't notice insects until after dark. At twilight the mosquitoes are out in full force, but after 10PM or so, they disappear as it cools down.

I wear bug repellent if I'm hiking in the woods, but other than that, I don't do anything.

We hike/walk in Hanover all the time, and here in our part of VT and the only bugs that are annoying are the flies/black flies...We don't use anything, just swat at them.

I'm not a fan of pesticides, though I would love a nice big hat with net like they use in 1950s African movies!!

Yep, mosquitoes usually calm down after it gets dark. I can't recall getting bit when I was walking in the dark.

And if you see more mosquitoes, it's because there's been showers almost everyday during late June.

With dry weather, you're more likely to get wasps and plain ol' flies.

Please do not forget the no-see-um's. They apparently consist of a pair of small wings attached to a very large mouth. Annoying little bugs.

I like the bug net for the horse.

At the Dollar store I have bought packs of incense punks. We stick two or three in the ground nearby when doing gardening. It seems to work, just make sure they are upwind from you.
