They did explain it; there was an error in the software.
As crazy as it sounds a very small software error (such as a missing comma) could cause something like this. It could also only occur at a specific system date/time...so any transactions at that time were affected (explaining those several thousand that were).
Just goes to show that while the systems are very good, the systems aren't perfect and reading your bill is important.

yes they did explain there was a glitch in the system. The two NH people were not alone. Various customers nationwide were charged the same amount.

I think there were 13,000 total transactions affected (sounds like a big number...but compared to the number of transactions per hour- its not at all) and they caught/corrected most of them before customer's knew about it.
