Default Mont Vernon schools?

A friend of ours is moving with her family to Mont Vernon and they're interested in finding out information about Mont Vernon and its schools. Could anyone please give me information that I can pass along to her? Thanks in advance.

It sounds like the elementary school isn't too great

Greatschools.net Search: mont vernon

but Mont Vernon students share Souhegan Coop high school with Amherst, and that's supposed to be a really good school. It was named one of the country's 1500 best by Newsweek (one of only two high schools in the state to make the list). It's a bit controversial (search the archives for details) but if your friend has high school students moving to Mont Vernon is probably a great and less expensive way into the school system than buying in Amherst. I've heard it's really pretty too.

This is the newsweek article:
America's Top Public High Schools | Newsweek Best High Schools | Newsweek.com

Just 2 NH high schools made the list of 1500 (top 6%). Souhegan and Hollis. the Mont Vernon kids go to Amherst Middle School for 7 - 8 and Souhegan for 9 - 12. My oldest graduated from SHS last month and we have a junior there and a 7th grader at AMS. Every year of my kids education has been in the Amherst school system. We are very pleased with it.

MV is a very nice town. More rural than Amherst. You can get more land and it costs less. The view from the top of the hill is great. I rode my bike up there a few years ago and it is a significant climb... If you don't have to commute to MA for work then MV is a fine choice....
