You can buy a new raised ranch in Willington CT (22 miles east of Hartford)
1 acre 1750 sq FT 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, family room, basement, double garage for 289K. That is reasonable.

I know many people will disagree but starter houses where I live now are probably NO LESS than $300,000 and that is not in a nice area.

The trouble is, our real estate market went insane. Ten years ago, my husband and I made about $40,000 combined and owned a home for a few years. Unfortunately my husband lost his job after a year or so.

Flash forward to having a child and one income and moving a bit and we are totally priced out of the market.

If I am going to go to work again, I want to be able to afford something, even a small modular home.

Here I can't afford ANYTHING even if we both worked full time (impossible with a child who is my #1 priority).
