Depending on where you want to settle (city, ocean, mountains, farmland, lakes, etc.) NH has much to offer. I am in the process of relocating to NH myself. I've been doing just research since last fall and have learned quite a bit. I have spent numerous days driving all over the state looking for a place to settle (you know, something that just grabs you!!). One day I drove over 600 miles zig-zagging all over the state. I'm starting to narrow it down to the Sunapee area.
I, too, used to live in NJ twenty-five years ago. I now live on Cape Cod but, alas, I think my time here is over. It's getting too crowded, too expensive, and too liberal. I know of some friends who just moved to Penn. from NJ. They just couldn't make it there anymore. Prices of housing near the city is way out of site. Depending on where you live, you just might make out ok if you own your home when you sell it. One thing you'll have to learn is how to pump your own gas (Ha!!).
Check out www.visitnh.gov/maps.html for some great detailed maps of NH. Also check out beangroup.com and habsrealestate.com for some great home listing search engines.

I would say you really need to narrow down what type of job you will need to have which will greatly impact the areas which fit your desires. Getting north of Concord jobs are service oriented and spread out. If you would like I can send you some information on what criteria you provide for employment requirement, housing/town charicteristics since I am in the business.

Hi,

We just moved to Littleton from the Mid-Hudson region of New York State and I have to say I've been very impressed with the area! The area is beautiful, as as you said, peaceful! I'm very impressed with the children and teens we've come in contact with so far - they have all been polite and well-mannered. Everyone up here has been great to us, especially since we're "flat landers" .

My family is also interested in moving to NH. My wife is an RN and I'm assuming there is a shortage in NH as there is in the rest of the country. I would work at just about anything - retail, contruction, etc.

I would also like to know more about housing/town characteristics and the school sysytem. This info would be much appreciated. thanks, Jim

Hi Deeds, I live in Littleon, NH and it is very safe and beautiful. People here are extremely polite. I left this post for V1B3: I hope it helps you, good luck to you.

Hi everyone, we live in Littleton, NH,for those of you who wanted to know more about NH, it was voted 9th best town in America, Outdoor magazine voted it one of America's Dream towns. It's Main Street has received numerous awards. The children are very polite, as well as the adults. No one cuts each other off and everyone says hello, and waves to each other. It is a wonderful town to live in and it is gorgeous. We have a brand new state of the art Hospital here in Littleton, called Littleton Regional Hospital. We also have Home Depot, Lowes and Walgreens opening soon, Walmart, Pub 99, Shaws, Applebees, McDonalds, Subway, Quiznos, and on and on here in Littleton. But we also have a quaint beautiful Main Street.

Unfortunately for us, we were not born and raised here, and our whole family is back in RI. So, we have decided to move back to RI. Back to the rudeness and road rage! Ugh!

So if anyone is interested, we mod cut

Chrisvivieros,

Thanks for the great info! Littleton/Bethlehem is one of the areas we are interested in moving. If you don't mind, I do have a few questions:

1.) How are the local schools? Is the quality of education high? No problems with gangs and such, I assume.

2.) How are the seasons? Can you count on a white Christmas? Are the summer heat and bugs very bad?

3.) Are locals welcoming to newcomers?

4.) Crime stats look great. Very low. Does that meet with reality? What would you say is the gravest safety concern there?

5.) You mentioned Wal-Mart and several of the chain stores in the area. Are they hurting local businesses at all?

I may have more later. Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

As for your properties, we might be VERY interested in that second one, but we probably aren't going to be able to move until early next summer. If it's still on the market then, let's talk.

Default Littleton Mark S

Hi Mark,

My husband and I just moved to Littleton in April of this year and obviously don't know a LOT about the town, but I can tell you this - the "locals" have been very welcoming to us and very friendly.

We've learned a lot by talking to the people in the Main Street shops - crime rate is very low - people still leave their doors unlocked <g>. The children and teenagers have been very friendly and helpful. They seem to have a lot of things for the kids to do when they aren't in school (during the summer, after school, vacation times, etc.) so they stay pretty active and out of trouble. Everyone seems to watch out for everyone else, especially when it comes to the kids, which I think is great. One lady told me that the majority of the teens seem to want to work when not in school <g>. I'm sure there are exceptions to that, just like anywhere else. I can't speak about the school system, as we have no children in the schools (our children are grown up with their own children now <g>). We have not see any evidence of or heard of anything remotely "gang" related (and there was a lot of that where we came from, so even if it was "hushed up", I think we'd probably see some sort of sign).

We've experienced spring here, which was beautiful, although wetter than usual; summer was great - warm during the day and cooled down at night, we ran the air conditioning a total of three times during the summer; fall seems to be here now and it's very pretty, cool and crisp, 60s during the day and last night it was in the high 30s. Obviously, we haven't experienced winter yet, but they said last year was relatively mild with not as much snow as usual - the school evidently planned for 3 snow days and didn't use any of them.

The local businesses seem to be doing pretty well, even with the chain stores. The only thing I really don't like is the fact that there's only one major grocery store (Shaw's) and it tends to be more expensive than what we were used to in NY (no real competition), but everything else here is less expensive than where we were, so it's not a major complaint, more of an observation, I guess.

Again, we're new here, so probably don't know as much about the town as those who have lived here for awhile, but we have been made to feel very welcome by anyone we've come in contact with.

I don't know if this has helped you, but I hope so! <g>

Good Day to you All,

I grew up on Long Island, NY and South Western NH. I've 40+ years of experience with the Greater Keene, NH area most notably the three towns directly North: Gilsum, Alstead, & Acworth. But am also very familiar with the Conneticut River Valley towns from Walpole to Charlestown to Claremont.

The Quality of life in this region is unmatched elsewhere in NH. This little section is the 20% of the State (by watershed) that is not a part of the Merrimack River Valley. This makes it unique in it's geology, and topography, Plus as an added bonus the City of Keene, NH - a vibrant college community! offers great employment and cultural activities.

Lastly being close to Intersate 91 in Bellows Falls VT, this area has become home to many from Long Island, New Jersery and Southern CT. Please let me know if you would like more info on this area.

P.S. I live currently just South of Nashua NH and am very familiar with this region as well.

Best Regards Jimmy P

Hi, I'm mom of three kids too. My older one goes to college the next year, but I have preschool twins and no husband (he decided that parenthood is not for him). I'm looking for a friendly little town to raise my kids. I'm a pediatric nurse and currently working on my MSN so I can have my own practice. Would we survive in NH? We live in Philly suburbs now and it is too expensive...
