Default Shooting in Dover area?

Hi,

Just moved into Dover, love it here. I'm wanting to go target shooting/plinking and am wondering where I can go around Dover. I know of Major Waltron's (sp?) range/sporting club in Barrington, but they want $150 to join. Isn't there somewhere around that's safe to shoot, like public land or something where the locals go? Anybody? I called the Dover PD and they recommended Major Waltron's -- guess they don't want people shooting willy-nilly, which I understand.

Cheers,
BWillis

That is the new member fee. It drops to $90 fter the first year. They also open their indoor range up on Thursday night from 7 to 9pm to non-members and members alike. Non-member fee is $10.00.

The matches and events held are also open to the public such as the Garand/Carbine match this Saturday at 9am. The calendar on their website lists all the events. Trap and skeet is open to the public with the fees reflecting member/non-member.

As far as open areas, I don't know of any but I use the club. If you have any other questions or want to stop by and look around, let me know. I'm local to you and a Board member of the club. Just drop me an email at rscalzo40@comcast.net.

I've heard good things about that club.

With all of the lawsuits around today, such as "the gun club that I just moved next door to and built a house- has guns going off and they sound like guns"...membership fees are higher than they have ever been before which is unfortunate.

LOL!! Sounds like "the farm I just moved next door to and built a house--has tractors driving around and kicking up dust, just like real tractors on real crops"

That has nothing to do with our dues structure which has remained fairly constant the past few years. running a club costs money. Real estate taxes, heating and electric costs and the vast number of improvements don't come cheap. Replacing one trap machine can run almost $9000.00. The trap houses, safety walls and berms and keeping up the club house come at a cost.

We enjoy an excellent repore with the town and our neighbors. We continue to do so because we hold our members to a high standard that makes the club an asset to the town and not a nuisance.

$90.00 a year is a bargain.

I will be a member in 5 years when I move back home to Barrington. I'll be living about 10 minutes away. I thought the club was just a skeet/trap range. I had no idea you had indoor and outdoor ranges and offered such a good variety of classes and competitions. You're right - $90 is a bargain! I can't wait!

Default Maj. Waldron Question

@rscalzo

Another future member here too. I'm already in NH, but before I can restart my love of distance shooting, I have to save for some seriously secure storage at home (3 kids under 5).

By any chance does Major Waldron's offer long arms storage for members?

Good deal! I was speaking in very generic terms that "legal fund" is an issue for many clubs (albeit mostly those in our neighbor state to the south).

Unfortunately no. We can barely find room to store the club owned firearms. I would suggest a safe. We bought ours from Sam's at about $550 each.

"legal fund"
We do maintain a fund for just such a reason but never needed it except for many years back. The issue could have been settled but a few stubborn members actually dragged it out.

By the way, we are holding out annual fundraiser for the Town of Barrington's Christmas Fund. It's open to all and every area of the club will be holding events up to shooting the 50 cal. rifle. Check the club's website for details.

Steveusaf...

North Dakota?? NH is going to seem like the tropics.

North Dakota - somebody's got to do it. The saying around here is "Why not Minot? Freezin's the Reason!" What I'm really dreading is if I get a middle east deployment leaving here in the winter and having to get used to the hot temps in the desert. That will be a tough adjustment!

50 cal. rifle? Oh my, that's really cool. Is it member owned and he/she is letting you use it for fundraising purposes? I have always wanted to shoot one of those. I hope it's still there in 5 years!
