You should be aware that New Hampshire does have some problems with Lyme disease and EEE. Both can be very dangerous. Bear that in mind if you decide to move here as there is no guarantee that you will be safe if you come.

Having moved from S NH to SoCal for 10 yrs then back to S NH, I can offer some feedback for you.

population/congestion: You won't find that here, although traffic around malls in 'cities' tend to attract numerous very bad drivers, especially in Nashua.

weather: I understand the discomfort of enduring triple digit temps and dangerous air conditions for weeks on end, but I was in LA Cty - SD's climate is more temperate and enjoyable, right? Personally, I prefer winter to summer, cold to hot but even I have frustrating moments like last night thinking it was nuts for my dogs to be dragging me across the ice at 10pm. Have you ever spent time in a cold climate with a real winter? Before making the move, I highly recommend you visit during winter and spend time out in it. There have been people from warmer climates on CD who have romanticized the thought of a white Christmas, sleighrides, and hot cocoa by the fire, who in reality were not able to cut it here. How is your endurance, really? It is a realistic thing to ask yourself if considering moving to the NE.

culture: another point I want to mention is that NH is not SoCal culturally. People here do not go into a panic if their car is dirty(and boy will it get dirty in winter), do not for the most part hire day laborers to take care of their responsibilities and most are not materialistic to the point of prioritizing image over substance. New englanders *in general* are cold and hard. Most do not have wonderful manners. There are more highly intelligent people in New England than in SoCal, but people in SoCal have better social skills than new englanders. People here mean what they say more of the time than people in SoCal. When I first moved there from here, I really expected people who said things like "I'll call you tomorrow and we'll go to lunch" to call. Here if they say it (takes time for someone to get that friendly unless you are very outgoing and initiate and they are not suspicious of your intention) they will call and go. There, it is just part of the overall vibe to indulge in extending one's intentions as long as there is no effort or sacrifice actually involved. There, people smile artificially and superfluously, here, people smile when they are drunk. Hunting is a way of life here, and most people have and some carry their guns. It is normal for here, and a traditional part of life, to be respected.

humidity: we have a few hot and humid days in the summer, few enough to be able to endure.

bugs: S NH is swarming with biting bugs from...hmmm...April-May - October. Tons of mosquitos, and Ticks, ticks and more ticks. Lyme disease is common here. You will be swapping your sunscreen for bugspray. The bugs are my least favorite part of life here.

I miss two things about SoCal only. My gardens and my kids excellent private school.

Hopefully I have not turned you off to NH completely, there is much to love here, especially if you are outdoorsy types. I did not emphasize NH's wonders because you need to be realistic as opposed to romantic in how you consider a potential NH life. If you are adaptable it will help tremendously.

Good luck!

Lyme disease can be fatal and is truly awful. We have deer everywhere here in New Hampshire and thus we have ticks everywhere. Very large and very hungry ticks. They will suck the blood out of anything they can get a hold of and they carry Lyme disease.

Be aware that we also have EEE here in New Hampshire as well.

"Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) is a rare but serious disease caused by a virus transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito. The EEE virus grows in birds that live in freshwater swamps. The virus can be transmitted to horses, other animals, and, in rare cases, people. There are no symptoms in some people who are infected but severe symptoms in others including high fever, stiff neck, seizures, and coma. One third of those with severe disease die. Of those that survive, many suffer permanent brain damage and require lifetime institutional care."

I have talked with a physician friend in NorCal, and Lyme disease has already arrived in CA. It was predicted to get there in 5 years, but moved a lot faster than expected. Actually, I've read on threads here that CA has a pretty high incidence of Lyme, although I never heard of anyone getting it while I was living there. And I was hiking in the woods all the time. I lived in Covina, then Torrance, but I spent a lot of time in Idyllwild and Angeles Nat. Forest during the summer.

I was pretty paranoid last summer. We used a lot of DEET on ourselves and our kids. Some people tried to steer us to more gentle bug spray with "natural" ingredients, but they didn't even keep the mosquitos away. Pretty useless as far as I could tell.

I hate the congestion here! That is one of our biggest turn offs of this place so huge points for less congestion. I just don’t want to be 20mins away from my neighbor or anything. That seems a little weird to me. We are huge homebodies! We spent a lot of time at home cooking, watching movies, playing games, having friends over. We like to get out and try something new at least once a month i.e. a picnic spot, a lake, beautiful place to take in a sunset. We love to eat! We like to sit down at a nice restaurant about once a week. I’m a music lover so concerts in the Summer time are a plus! Is there a large venue in the state? I’m a big Dave Matthews Band fan and he just put out his tour dates…I noticed the closest venue he was playing was in CT. Is that typical of large bands? I like to relax on the beach in the Summer as well…so I love that we will still have that. Winter sports…I haven’t done much but I’m very interested in learning. We go sledding up in the mountains here and I love it. I know that’s just sledding but still WAY fun to me. I have lived in Chicago and even though it was really flippin cold it didn’t bother me that much. However, I never drove there…I took the L everywhere. Driving in the snow is a little scary thought but I guess like anything else it’ll take some getting used to. When we were in SC the bugs we’re just swarming the lawn in the middle of the day in June. We had to cover ourselves in deet… me especially as mosquitoes LOVE me! I wasn’t a big fan of that. I understand they’re bugs anywhere you go. And the closer you are to water the more there are. I just don’t want to worry about getting bit every time I walk out to my car. Green Martian - Ew. I get the picture...beware of Lyme disease! Just teasin'.

We are not stereotypical Californians that you’re thinking of. I think you’re thinking of more the ritzy Orange County type that we can’t stand. I’m originally from the I.E. alright! If anyone out there is from CA then they know what that means, LOL. We rarely wash our cars, could care less about designer clothes and have never hired a laborer to do anything for us in our lives. We clean our home, do our own grocery shopping, pack up and move ourselves when we’re ready to go. And although I do like to get my hair done once and a while I can count on one hand how many times I’ve ever had a pedicure! We’re really more of the laid back, go with the flow and keep to ourselves type. I love music and wine, he loves video games and BluRay and we both love to eat! There, that’s us in a nutshell. haha. We like to socialize but we’re both a little socially awkward at first…take some warming up to. So I guess we’ll fit right in there? We smile when we’re drunk too, hehe. Hunting doesn’t bother us in the least bit. To each their own. We’re neither Conservative nor Liberal. We’re both middle of the road.

So basically nothing you’re saying has turned me away. I’m still just as excited as ever to come up there and visit and hopefully find a new place to call home! I will def miss my family. I will miss SD days like today where it’s 70 degrees out in February! I will miss SD beaches and the amazing sunsets. I will miss the delicious Mexican food! But I sure as heck won’t miss that hour it took me to drive 20 miles today to get to work! Or that $8 salad I had for lunch. The $300k shack the realtor showed us. And that bum I pass by on the way home every day with his sign that reads “I ain’t gonna lie. Eff the food, I need a drink!” Well maybe I’ll miss that bum just a little bit.

You should fit in fine in NH rocknrollgirl. If you know what the pros and cons are and still make the move, then you should be OK. You seem to have a good plan and an open mind.

The Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester gets some huge acts (and also has an AHL hockey team) and there are assorted indoor and outdoor concert venues throughout the state. A lot of acts like DMB and the huge radio shows with assorted big names come to the Comcast Center in Mansfield, Mass which isn't too tough of a drive. The Mohegan Sun Casino in CT is a bit of a drive, but it's worth it as it's a fantastic gambling spot with an arena attached that hosts some of the best names in music.

And your politics will fit in fine in NH, people are largely Independent voters who will look at the candidate and vote for the one they feel is strongest.

I suggest you take up skiing, lots of fun to be had in both NH and Vermont on the slopes in the winter.

I've never had a serious problem with bugs, but that's just me. Certainly no worse than the southern states. Wear bug spray and you'll be fine.

I know what you mean. You sound like a good fit. If you are homebodies, I recommend finding a place with a decent fireplace to eat/drink/play cards by on our many cold NH evenings

I didn't mean to sound totally discouraging in my previous post, but if you happened to be the materialistic variety Californian, you'd really need to think twice about the convenience of maintaining the lifestyle here. You'd be surprised how many take the leap blind. Or maybe not
