Your not going to find anywhere outside of Keene that is a 10-15 minute jog to downtown. I live in west Keene about a quarter of a mile from the highs school and its at least a 30 minute jog to main street. As far as elem schools go, I went to Simons school right next to Wheelock park in west Keene and I thought it was a good school. I also had many friends that went to Fuller school across from the high school and they all liked it very much. I also went to Jonathan Daniels located on Maple ave. and that school was horrible. Oh any it has only been 10 years since I was in elem school they could not have changed that much; although Keene has changed a good amount in those years. When I moved here back in 97 the population was right around 22,000. Since then at least 5 new neighborhoods have gone up around town (that I can think of off the top of my head) and 3 new traffic circles got put in to accommodate the huge increase in traffic. To give you an idea how much Keene has grown; 6 years ago I could walk down the middle of West street at 10pm with all the traffic lights flashing and see maybe 4 cars. Now driving down West Street at 2am I get stuck at a stop light with 4 other cars. They need to update there population records for Keene.
When considering towns and neighborhoods to live in I would think about west Keene, Spoffered (just over chesterfield hill past west Keene), Chesterfield (just past Spoffered about 15-20 minute drive into Keene), Westmorland (many old homes that don’t go up for sale often), north east Keene (near the hospital) and even Roxbury (very small town south east of Keene close to downtown). Just remember the neighborhood you live in will most likely determine what elem school your kids go to.
Oh and as far as the flooding goes…Keene is in a valley so anywhere is susceptible to flood. But east Keene and Winchester street got hit bad in the flood of 05. We didn’t have any flooding in west Keene.
I hope I was able to help
