Cell Service in Durham (Dover, Newmarket: live, price, moving to)

I'm an incoming freshman at UNH, wondering what cell phone provider has the best reception in the Durham area.

I've heard Sprint... true?

None honestly....this is New Hampshire after all! The cellular service in Rockingham and Stafford counties is notorious for being disgraceful. I would advise you go with T-Mobile, the lesser of all evils...better priced than most carriers and some what better customer service than the likes of Verizon. Plus as a UNH student you may find yourself spending some time in Newmarket and on the shoreline. T-Mobile gets somewhat of a signal very close to downtown Newmarket- which is an accomplishment in itself- trust me. Along the beaches, you can utilize T-Mobile which is unusual. Verizon you can't on most any shoreline in New England. I'd be wary of Sprint: customer satisfaction is low in most all facets.
Pre-paid phone plans have poor satisfaction rates as well, but that is another viable option. I made the choice to totally drop any cell phone plan and went back to a land line once I left my job where I traveled aplenty. I carry a phone card and have a land line at work I can utilize all day for personal calls. Especially as a full-time student, if you are the one footing the bill, you will quickly loathe paying $40 + cell bills every month for zero reception and constant dropped calls. You may simply find out it isn't worth the hassle.

Was just wondering if cell service in the UNH area has improved at all since this post ran 2+ years ago? Looking at moving to the area and looking for recommendations.

My Verizon service is always stronger than my AT&T iPhone.

This is a good point. I've got Sprint in Sacramento, CA, and my daughter has Sprint in Boston. Both of us get good coverage. How is Sprint's service in NH?

I'm in the UNH area frequently, and the only place I regularly drop calls is a small section in Lee, along 125 or North River Road (Rte 155) Lots of hills and valleys along 155, and by the time I get to the intersection of 152, it's back to 4 bars. Service increased dramatically in the area when I got a new phone...

Verizon still is mostly non-existent on the coast.

My son is a student at UNH and now lives in Dover, ATT has worked out fine. We went with ATT b/c of spots on Rte.4 near UNH where Verizon wouldn't work.
