Besides taking the AC Expwy, which would be the best way in terms of time ? I will be taking either the Ben Franklin or Walt Whitman Br. over the river.
I know 30 and 322 are the main alternate routes to the ACE. Which is quicker ?
It looks like NJ 55 to US 40 could be feasible if I take the Whitman Br. over as well.
When are you going , if your going on a Friday to Sunday , you can park in Newark and take ACES (Atlantic City Express ) A luxury Train (not that expensive) to AC. If your going during the week , the Atlantic City Expressway isn't that bad ive taken it a few times. Although it gets a bit slower near the parkway area. US 322 , US 30 are slower and have lights.
The ACE is the fastest route generally. Of course on summer weekends it gets horribly backed up. I've never done the Route 40 thing, but have taken Route 30 many times. Route 30 is a pretty easy ride once you get east of Berlin. I think 30 is quicker if the ACE is really backed up, but it definitely takes more time if ACE traffic is light. An alternative to get to Route 30 from the city would be to take Betsy or Tacony bridge to 73 South and take 73 South and pick up Route 30 in Atco. You avoid the major headaches on 30, but 73 isn't exactly a cake walk most days either.
PS You could also take Route 70 from Ben to 73 to 30.
White Horse Pike, believe it or not, is ALMOST as efficient as the ACE. The two snags are Hammonton and Little Egg. I've done both many times from Philly, and White Horse is much faster than Black Horse, in my opinion. I actually enjoy either of these two routes, or used to, when going to AC to visit friends, than I did the ACE. Most of these roads are still rural, by New Jersey standards, and make for a great change of pace for the stressed out, New Jersey driver.
55 is great to get to any of the Cape May County shore points, but it's too far out of the way to be an efficient route to AC, and 40 is two lanes much of the way.
322 has a lot of lights and shopping areas from Mays Landing to AC.
30 has lights too, but seemingly less than 322. I usually take the ACE from Philly to AC, but if I had to pick an alternate route it would be 30.
I'm assuming you want to avoid the tolls on the ACE? The best to do it IMO is to take Route 42 before it turns into the ACE and to exit 7 Route 168 North and then meander over towards the white horse pike from there. Follow the google map below - it will put you on Route 30 in Berlin and you will avoid most of the congestion that occurs northwest of there.
I'm trying to minimize the tolls as much as possible. Since I'm going to be making a stop in NE Philly for lunch, perhaps it's just better to take 73 over and then 30 in. I'm not gonna be in a hurry and would like a scenic drive down instead of the ACE anyhow.
Please take the Expressway from Philly to the shore so that those of us who live on those routes can live their lives.
On a series note, other than 322 (via the Walt Witman) and the White Horse PikeI can't think of any route that would be faster from Philly. Rt. 55 to A.C. is probably going to be slower.
Nexes, he's coming from Philly, so driving to Newark is definitely out of the question. I would recommend the Atlantic City Line, if it had a decent schedule, because if you miss it, you're pretty much screwed for the next two hours, sadly I know this from experience

If you are going to be in NE Philly already, then I would just take the Betsy Ross Bridge to 73 to 30. I would try to be in NJ by 2pm (if it is a weekday) since rush hour on 73 south can be pretty brutal.
