Your best bets (Collingswood, Westmont, Haddonfield) areas along PATCO route. You can go a tad further out if you want (Ashland, Lindenwold, Woodcrest) if you want but that will add more of a commute but maybe get a you a bigger place for same price.Check Craigslist for rentals in Westmont / Haddon Township area. I would think you could find something for $1000 range (duplex/triplex etc...) Single Family homes are probably a few hundred more. Westmont/Haddon Twp is probably your best bang for your buck and has good schools. Haddonfield has the best schools but rent will jump a bit for a few blocks over. Good luck. And as others said avoid Camden if you can. No reason to live there.

If the OP is going to be working in or near the Hall of Justice or Rutgers, access is best via PATCO. There is another job center on Mt Ephraim Ave., which is not directly accessible via PATCO. There are some other, smaller job centers that are not accessible via PATCO. I have asked where the job is 2 times & have not gotten a response to that question.
Even though you haven't responded, I figured I might make a rental suggestion. There are apartments in the Ashland section of Voorhees that are within an easy walk to the Ashland PATCO station. The name of the complex is Robin Hill and they have 2 bedrooms in your budget and include some utilities as well as having in unit washer/dryer. Also, the schools in Voorhees are pretty good and your child would be bussed from the apartments to school.
Outside of that Collingswood and Westmont/Haddon Twp. are going to be your best bet.
