I would also consider the Manayunk section of Philadelphia.

I am also looking at center city, philadelphia and cherry hill, NJ.
Can anyone recommend a nice place to stay? I have been going crazy trying to find a place to rent with no luch. HELP!
Do you mean "active" as in outdoorsy/fitness activities or just hipster, going out kind of people?

Good luck with the move. California must be more $$ than here so you should be able to upgrade your living situation. Cherry Hill is VERY suburban and has all of the shopping you may like, but the general area has a ton of great restaurants around. Collingswood is a local town with great places to eat. Haddonfield has a charming downtown area. Also, a rapid transit line (Patco) runs through CH and can zip you into Center City in 15-20 min for all of the bar action you might like.

If you are stuck strictly on SoJer and want the excitement of CC Philly, you are probaby best suited for Collingswood. You never mentioned if you had children or not but if you don't and aren't relying on good schools, you may want to consider South Philly. Areas like East Passyunk Crossing and Passyunk Square are on a resurgenece from older Italian to hipster, college grad and the prices are still decent. Drawbacks are: a smaller row home, congested parking and city wage tax. Pluses are: walkable to almost anywhere with lots of variety in food, nightlife, grocery, etc. This is primarily the "Pat's & Geno's" area that you see on TV.
