I am moving from Boston to Cherry Hill, NJ and am buying a home. Signed a contract and is in Attorney review period. My agent says, it is not common to have buyer Attorney in a Real Estate transaction in south jersey.

Is this True? Should I have an Attorney for our safety? If so please advise a good real-estate attorney in Camden county. Thanks!

I believe this is true. I was from Northern NJ before I moved to Southern NJ. I was used to using an attorney. People looked at me like I had three heads when I used one. It actually made the seller nervous enough to almost pull out of the deal. Personally I think it is worth it to use one. But you definitely don't need to.

Although the main reasons I would want an attorney are to review the contract and deal with attorney review so it sounds like those will already be over by the time you would get one anyway.

We used an attorney when we bought our house in southern New Jersey. I would take anything your realtor said with a grain of salt - it is his/her job to close the deal and collect commission.

It's optional. I did not have one.

I would not sell or buy without one!
Or the next post from you will be "why I should have had an attorney"!

It's your team, it's up to you and people are so honest these days you probably don't need one and it's a good way too save money...

It's definitely not the norm in South Jersey. I've bought three times and sold once, none of the transactions involved an attorney representing either party.

Let's put it this way. You are about to make a huge purchase. Is spending $500 (I assume it's still about the rate) worth it? Only you can answer that question, not your RE agent.

If you need recommendation for one, I have two that I used in the past. One in Moorestown and one in Cherry Hill. Just send me a message

Thanks for your responses. I am little confused due to bi-partisan responses. But since the majority says go with Attorney. I want to have one. Any suggestions for a good, reliable attorney at a reasonable cost.

Thanks again for your suggestions!

I never used one... at this point in time (for the sale contract) the issue is somewhat moot.

Now the question becomes whether you want one at closing. Might not be all that bad an idea if you're not comfortable/familiar with the process -- the lawyer will at least explain what you're signing and provide a level of comfort.

I did not use one, and wish I had.
