...via public transit seems rather awkward. Train to Subway to Trolley...even with the Phlash trolley you have to transfer.

Am I dreaming or wasn't there a trolley or bus from SJ to the Zoo? We just moved here last year and I am sure I heard something about that but cannot find anything online.

I've never heard of a bus or trolley line that goes from South Jersey to the Philly Zoo. You would have to transfer once you get in Philly and catch either the Septa Route #15 or the nearby Route 38 bus. As for getting to Philly from South Jersey the "Atlantic City Line" would be a great option because the train goes straight to West Philly, which is the same section of the city the zoo is located. Another great option is the "Patco Speedline", which goes to Center City but runs alot more frequent than the "Atlantic City Line". The choice is yours.

If you don't want to drive to the Philadelphia Zoo from SJ, your best bet is to take the PATCO from one of the NJ station and take the Phlash. Just get off 8th and Market and take the Phlash at 6th and Market.

How many people do you have traveling? It's $2 per ride but you can get a day individual or family pass.

I gave the Atlantic City Line option because I don't know what part of South Jersey "Luhts" is coming from.

The zoo is one of the few places where it is a million times easier to drive. It is easy to get to, and LOTS of parking for only $12. I can pack the car with the stroller and lunch since you an bring food to the zoo (but no straws for the safety if the animals). Saves us time and money. last time 4 of us ate in the park we spent $60.00 in food at the BBQ place.

I agree that driving to the zoo isn't bad at all. That would be my choice over public transportation with very young kids.

Thanks. I agree that driving versus transferring transit twice with two kids would be easier. I am just still nervous driving in Philly (small town Canadian girl). It's pretty direct, though, so maybe I will give it a shot.

It's a pretty direct drive once you cross the B Franklin bridge. Just stay on the left lane crossing the bridge to get onto 676 west. You are not going to be on the "sure kill" too long so you will be fine. Just avoid trying to go through the local way via the art museum area if you are not familiar with the city.

Driving is the easiest way, especially with young kids. Just make sure to avoid travelling to and from during rush hour if you are uncomfortable with the traffic or unfamiliar with where you are going. If you do decide on transit, the best suggestion was PATCO to 8th and Market and then taking the Phlash from 6th and Market. Just realize that cost wise, it will be less to drive and park, then it is to take transit. The bridge toll is $5 and parking is $12, so $17 plus gas. Transit for an adult and two kids is $15.60 for three roundtrip tickets on PATCO and then another $12 for two trips on Phlash, so $27.60. You can shave a few bucks off of that if you take PATCO from Ferry Ave. or Collingswood instead of Woodcrest or Lindenwold, but you will still end up paying more.
