Moving To Lakehurst NAS (Toms River: apartments, rentals, condos)

I am considering moving to this area from North Carolina. It's a job related move and I'm wondering about areas where I can get a safe, reasonably priced rental. Some people have told me that you can't touch a nice two bedroom apartment for less than $1300 month which is out of my budget. I don't mind driving 30 minutes or so to get to work but the main thing for my wife is safety. My kids are grown and gone so schools are not an issue. I do have a dog that is under 25 lbs.

I am a DoD civilian employee so I can turn down the job but I'd really like to take it. Any ideas about towns that will suit my needs? Ideally I'd like a two bedroom for less than $1200 a month in a safe area. Any ideas on where I can find something like that? Thanks...

Just for reference, are you currently in Fayetteville or one of the other bases?

If you're going to at NAS Lakehurst, the most convenient area to look for rentals is going to be Toms River. You should be able to find something decent in a 2BR in that area for $1,200. Just looking briefly, this place came up that has rents starting at $1,050 for a 1BR, but it looks like a pretty nice community...

The Fairways at Bey Lea (Toms River,NJ)

They're advertising 2BR/2BA with a garage for $1,600, so I have to think a simpler 2BR without a garage should be within your range. This search on apartments.com turned up 84 options all in that area with prices ranging from $800 - $1,800+

Toms River is a decent and safe area, but I imagine some of the older, cheaper apartments can get sketchy. However, that search shows that you should be able to get into one of the nicer communities based on your budget.
