Though I wish the line was a rapid transit line similar to the Patco, I think light rail will do just fine. I'm hoping that the line would eventually extend to Millville, NJ once the Camden-Glassboro phrase is finished.

I was for it when the Burlington & Gloucester County lines were originally proposed & would have been heavy rail. It's been too long.

I agree in that something should have been done a long time ago. I quite embarrassing to have a suburban county so close to one of the largest cities in the country and not have any passenger rail service. You just don't see this kind of stuff in cites like Chicago and NYC when it comes to their immediate suburbs.

The lines were originally proposed by PATCO. Trenton's refusal to assist played into the attempt to secede. It's a disgrace.

I don't think anyone is against it , but the cost is outrageous....1.6 billion for a Diesel line that reuses the tracks. I could understand if it were 1.6 billion if it went all the way to Millville and they threw in the West Trenton Extension , Cape may Branch , Mount Holly Branch and Hammonton LRT...all of which would total about 180 miles...thats worth 1.6 Billion not this tiny line. Even the Electric Expansions up North don't even approach 1 billion , they range between 600 and 900 million...

well i guess there is alot of work to be done on the line like new track, stations, signals, railcars, parking lots, grade crossings, debt services, and other things. It would have cost have as much 15 years ago when it was first proposed, instead of the riverline, but its not going to get cheaper in the future. Hopefully something like half the money will come from the feds. If nj does not spend the money on rail in south jersey they will probably spend it on roads or rail up north, where there is always higher demand.

Kind of reminiscent of that mind-blowingly expensive boondoogle from the late 1990's that never made the cut - the Schuylkill Valley Metro.
This seems like a good plan. Hopefully they can come up with something that is reasonably priced enough that funding can be found.

The SVM was a great plan , and would have had the ridership to back it up....so it wasn't a boondoggle....You had to build 2 Electrified tracks next to the NS line and restore a few viaducts and Urban philly stations.

For 1.6 Billion you could build all the Proposed Diesel and Electric North and Central Jersey Regional Rail lines which comes to 344 miles and over New 120 Stations. Parking lots , Tracks , Grade Crossings would cost about 100 million , Stations 140-170 Million depending on how big they want them , Signals and the Railcars would cost between 200 and 400 million combined... But its no where near the 1.6 billion , that really doesn't make any sense.. Newark-Elizabeth LRT which will have to be tunneled and run on viaducts will cost about 900 million...1.1 billion if you include the Newer Trains. Same with the Newark-Paterson LRT....the costs line up with what needs to be done and capacity upgrades.. Here it seems either inflated or corrupt...Diesel should cost not even half that.
