I currently live in newark DE with my husband who is African American and my two children who are of mixed race. My husband has a union job and has been transferred to wilmington. we are now house hunting and since wilmington is out, we were looking into south jersey. I was interested in pensville area, but have researched it and it is 93% Caucasian. I'm worried my kids will not be excepted at the school and me and my husband may be rejected by the community. Any thoughts on this? Anyone live in the area or surrounding area that may have some feedback or advice on where to move in south jersey with an inter racial family. There seem to be more mixed races a few towns over in penns grove, but the school is only ranked 2 out of 10 and I can't put my kids education on the line either.
Thanks

If education is a priority as well as acceptance, then I think you need to look further north towards the Swedesboro area. There is a large middleclass African American community in that area that has been well established for years. I live in Logan Township and there are several children of mixed race parents that go to school with my kids and no issues from it at all. The mayor and deputy mayor of Logan are both African Americans and the prinicpal of the one the elementary schools is also African American. I have lived there for over three years, have three kids in school and coach sports and have never heard of any race issues. It's a similar situation in Swedesboro proper as well as Woolwich Township.
Logan is notable because of the low property taxes and the variety of housing stock that covers a wide price range. You can buy a home in Logan in the upper 100's all the way up to 500+ with property taxes running 3,500-7,000+, which are a major bargain in NJ.
So, if you care about education, want to be assured of a "comfortable diversity" and your husband doesn't mind adding an extra 10-15 minutes to his commute, look into Logan, Swedesboro and Woolwich. Any of the other communities in Salem that I would recommend that have more diversity also have poor school systems.

Whatever you do AVOID Vincentown, NJ
I know it's not in the area you're looking at...BUT I've heard from multiple sources that Vincentown, NJ is EXTREMELY racist!
They're supposedly very hostile to anyone who isn't lily white.
Anybody know what the story is with these sociopaths??
