Apartments for Rent in Haddonfield, NJ - HotPads
Yea...almost nothing there is under 1000$.

Don't overlook Westmont/Haddon Township in your search. It's situated in the middle of the two more active downtowns and has its own PATCO stop. In addition Westmont isn't dry like Haddonfield and Collingswood, so that's where any of the actual bars in the area are. With high demand in Collingswood and Haddonfield, you may find a good deal on a place in Westmont that while not necessarily on Haddon Avenue, may be only a block or two off.
Westmont is ideal. However, I have only seen a handful of those storefront apartments up for rent. Something in a house a few blocks away would be cool too, but they are few and far between. But yea, with its own local bars, midway between Haddonfield and Collingswood, and a short ride to Center City, Westmont is in some ways an ideal spot to live.

Not necessarily, but you have to be willing to take less space or switch to a traditional apartment complex.

OP, also look in the West/East Mt Airy sections of Philly. Both areas offer an easy commute from Temple, plenty of apartments with off-street parking for under 1,000/mo easily. It is also a easy ride to Center City over Lincoln Drive or you can shoot to Manayunk or Chestnut Hill (more quaint) for entertainment. I just rented out two very nice units I own for 700/825 respectively and lived in the area for many years before relocating to S. Jersey.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I visited that area last year and liked some parts. Chestnut Hill is more my style than Mt. Airy, though I understand the latter is cheaper. I don't love the road network in that area though. To get back to Jersey I'd either have to take the PA turnpike across to Bordentown or come down to Center City on the Schuylkill or Germantown Avenue. Honestly, if I'm going to live in a quaint, somewhat alternative town, I'd prefer to live in Collingswood where I get 24/7 access to Center City on the Patco and a shirt drive to get on 295. If I was really pressed I'd probably settle for Mt. Airy, but at this point I don't really have to worry about moving so I can afford to wait and see if anything that strikes my fancy in Collingswood pops up.

One town--Collingswood. Forget Haddonfield unless you have kids. Plus, you cannot afford it on a grad student budget.

No problem. Collingswood is a good option and seems to fit all of your checkboxes so go for it. Whatever you decide good luck.
