How common are these? I killed one today that I'm fairly certain was a brown recluse, and I'm freaked out. It was all brown, no stripes, long spindly legs, telltale violin shaped mark on back. Does this mean there are MORE?

I hate to be the guy that brings back an old thread, but I have to ask....did you take a photo? Where did you find it? I've been reading a lot about this spider recently. Apparently, some of the midwestern states like MO live with seeing these things everywhere. Although not as common here, they have been found here in NJ as well.
Where is Sunset Bay anyway....hopefully far from me!
There are brown recluse spiders in NJ, but they are rather rare. Where I live we have pretty much every insect known to exist in NJ and I have never seen one in or near my house. They generally prey on other insects, so the less other insects you have, the better you will be. We treat our house each year with the Ortho Home Defense Max spray and it does a great job creating a barrier around the house to keep insects out and away from the house.
I have these! I never knew what they were called; not in a million years could I have spelled it. These are so freaky looking.
