It's all relative. If these things are close to you, so be it. I know exactly where all of these stores are.
The intervention you speak of is only one location. If the OP is lucky enough to live there then some of what you say may be true.
Starting from your intersection of Haddon Ave and Cuthbert Rd and walking:
The Target is a 1-hour 12-minute walk and between 4 and 5 miles away according to your route.
The acme is within walking distance at5 miles from your intersection.
there is a pharmacy on the corner of Haddon Ae and Cuthbert Rd.
There are bars within a mile or so of Haddon Ave and Cuthbert rd. Some are in Westmont, not Collingswood
This all works if you happen to live near this intersection or if you happen to live near Patco.

I stand by everything I said. If you do not work in center-city Philadelphia, you will have to take other transportation from Patco once you reach Philly.

Most towns in south jersey are bedroom communities. They are not walkable.
And even if you could walk to certain places, how practical is it. Will you be doing grocery shopping on foot.
Would you want to walk home from bars and restaurants at night?
Do you want to walk home from the train to your home in the snow and ice?
Do you want to be limited to only what's available in any of these small towns for your needs?

Counting on walking or public transportation is not practical in south jersey. You need a car. Philadelphia is a big city with many suburbs where one could find employment. Without a car, you'd be limited to center-cit Philadelphia.
