After checking out a house for sale in Gibbstown today, I decided to take a quick look at the surrounding area. I headed north into Paulsboro and noticed a very strong odor. I assumed it was coming from what looked like a refinery behind a shopping center.

Is the smell permanent and residents have adjusted to it or is it something that only happens once in a while?

Sunoco and Valero have big refineries in Paulsboro. That's probably the source of the smell.

Yeah, occasional as in it will occasionally make you nauseous, but occasionally it's only some vague smell. The smell isn't always present, but it is common and varies in intensity. I would personally avoid the immediate Paulsboro area when it comes to buying a house.

The Paulsboro Gibbstown area ALWAYS smells bad because of those oil plants. Sometimes its so bad it makes you sick, most of the time its just there. But its there ALL THE TIME. I moved out in 2010 and all my friends got out long before that. I would 100% absolutely avoid this area. Sorry.
