I lived 2 blocks away from Carlo's for a few years and gave it a shot on two separate occasions (years before it became famous). The baked goods were unimpressive, and the attitudes were really obnoxious and condescending; it was as if they were doing you a favor by waiting on you.
I've found that whenever I go to a "famous" restaurant that's supposed to be the greatest of its kind, I always walk away thinking along the lines of "well, it was pretty good, but what's the big deal?"
I don't have much of a sweet tooth, so Carlo's wouldn't interest me, but I've gone to a few of the well-known restaurants in NYC (places like Daniel, Nobu, Peter Luger, Balthazar) and while they all serve good food, there are places around here that are generally just as good. The one exception, ironically, is in Hoboken. I went to a place there called Augustino's that supposedly has standing reservations from Eli Manning, Corzine, etc. for a private party and I must say it lives up to the hype. The food would be tough to replicate elsewhere.
Aside from that and a couple other random places outside of New Jersey, I don't know, guess I'm tough to impress.
My family & I have been going to Carlos for decades. It was FAR FAR FAR better before it became the "Cake Boss." It was always a bit more expensive than other area bakeries, but it was WORTH it. Now it's mass produced, mediocre and ABSURDLY over priced.
Got my wedding cake from there 3 months ago - I didn't have to wait in line for the consultations but it was a MOB SCENE even going inside - would never wait in that line..EVER!
2 pies for Thanksgiving cost me $40.00 at Carlo's Bakery. My wife ordered the pies, but never asked the price, and when I picked them up I was hit with a $40.00 bill, was too late to go somewhere else. This guy's not a multi millionaire for nothing. He's pretty much ripping off the residents of Hoboken and the surrounding towns. And to be honest they where no better then the fresh baked pies you can get at Shop-Rite for a third of the price.
