In NJ, you can call the local assessor (who may or not have the time to research it while you wait -- cutbacks have affected service). Or you can visit the assessor's office and ask to see the property's file (which may be computerized -- and some of the programs the local offices use aren't exactly user-friendly -- or it may be hardcopy). Again, you may have to give them lead time and you may have to fill out a form requesting access to the file.

NJ Tax Records Search

this doesn't go back ad infinitum, but it's a good start.

An actual website is NateFind.com. You can only look up NY and NJ, but all the records are there. It doesn't go back forever, but at least to the late 90's. You reference by state then town then street and then the house number. There are seperate entries for each transaction, so one property may have multiple records.

It's not the best site, but it's free and would be a good place to get an idea. Also, I believe Zillow contains sales records as well, but they aren't the most up to date.
