I have a built-in unit, but the stand-alones seem to go pretty cheap these days...why would a thief bother with a used $100 GPS? (unless they're frustratingtly bad with directions themselves...)

Car thefts can yield portable DVD players, GPS, cell phones, handbags, or cash. Many of these items can be resold for a few bucks to buy drugs or alcohol.
For those drivers using GPS suction mounts, it is worth considering replacing them with the non skid GPS mount pads that are placed on top of dashboards. They don't leave the tell tale suction imprint on windshields. They are quite inexpensive with prices ranging from $9.99 to $24.99.
