If you work in Brooklyn you have a not too bad commute if you look in Edison, the Clara Barton section. Very close to 440 to Staten Island over the bridge to Brooklyn. Very good schools. Nice neighborhood. Very residential. You do not want to be out of Middlesex County. Parts of Woodbridge would work too. Good luck.

You could look in the Woodbridge/New Brunswick area. You probably should try to find a town either near the Outerbridge or the Goethals Bridge on Staten Island, if you want your commute to be reasonable. I don't know if you do the commute now, but your costs are going to be high in tolls. The Verrazano Bridge will soon be $11 a crossing, and the NJ bridges are $8. $19 in tolls plus gas money from NJ equals a very expensive commute!

As a word of warning, you're going to hit MASSIVE amounts of traffic on Staten Island on the way to Brooklyn if you commute during regular hours. There are ways to avoid the traffic, but coming from New Jersey, it's not as easy as it could be.

You could also look on Staten Island. The problem is you won't get as much for $460,000 in Staten Island, than in some parts of New Jersey and the public schools there are not the best. The major difference is that your commute could be a lot better, depending on where you live.

I would pick Denville, NJ.........Country like, good schools, nice lake communities........great for kids and kids swimming sports.
Less then an hour to the city and you can grab a bus in and out of the city from there......or perhaps a train from the station.
A wonderful town for a family.
I'd choose Lake Arrowhead in Denville and love everyday spent there. ( yes, I lived there as a child)
