Default Best Places to Live in NJ - Need to commute to NYC

Hi,
I am currently looking to buy a house in NJ, preferably in a town that is not more than an an hour commute to NYC and has good schools (we have two little ones). Our max is about $460. Any/all suggestions would be most appreciated! (Good, family neighborhoods)

well that narrows it down to about 200 towns, care to offer more specifics?

If you're planning on commuting by train I'd say get a NJ transit map and stay close to the train routes. Being close enough to walk to the station is a plus because parking can be expensive and a hassle. Some nice towns to consider would be Cranford, Westfield, Garwood, Fanwood, Scotch Plains.
I lived in NJ for 15 years and these are towns that I'm familiar with, maybe other posters can make more suggestions.

Depends on what you're looking for in a town. Carteret is a blue-collar neighborhood with some OK areas, some so-so areas, and some areas I wouldn't send my worst enemy to. There's a lot of redevelopment work planned in the town, but so far it's been mostly industrial areas that have been getting re-done.

I wouldn't invest a nickle there, it is an old depressed town surrounded by refinaries

Check out Morris and Essex county. Northern Union (limited to maybe Summit and Westfield). I would suggest living on the Midtown Direct if you work in Midtown, or on the Path if you work downtown. You will want to live in a town without a switch over (like any town on the midtown direct line up to Denville).
